Job Description

Hi, we are ecobee.

ecobee introduced the world’s first smart Wi-Fi thermostat to help millions of consumers save money, conserve energy, and bring home automation into their lives. That was just the beginning. We continue our pursuit to create technology that brings peace of mind into the home and allows people to focus on the moments that matter most. We take pride in making a meaningful difference to the environment, all while being part of the exciting, connected home revolution.

In 2021, ecobee became a subsidiary of Generac Power Systems. Generac introduced the first affordable backup generator and later created the category of automatic home standby generator. The company is committed to sustainable, cleaner energy products poised to revolutionize the 21st century electrical grid. Together, we take pride in making a meaningful difference to the environment.

Why we love to do what we do:

We’re helping build the world of tomorrow with solutions that improve everyday life while making a positive impact on the planet. Our products and services work in harmony to provide comfort, efficiency, and peace of mind for millions of homes and businesses. While we’re proud of what we’ve done so far, there’s still a lot we can do—and you can be part of it.

Join our extraordinary team.

We're a rapidly growing global tech company headquartered in Canada, in the heart of downtown Toronto, with a satellite office in Leeds, UK (and remote ecopeeps in the US). We get to work with some of North America and UK's leading professionals. Our colleagues are proud to bring their authentic selves to work, confident that what we do is grounded in a greater purpose. We’re always looking for curious, talented, and passionate people to join our team.

Who You’ll Be Joining

Join a diverse, multi-talented team combining mechanical engineering, electronics manufacturing, and supply chain expertise. As a Staff Mechanical Engineer, you’ll lead hands-on integration of design and production, working alongside Product, Industrial Design, Electrical Engineering, and external suppliers to shepherd prototypes into high-volume manufacturing.

This role requires hands-on presence in our Toronto office 3–5 days per week.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Lead mechanical design from overall architecture through detailed drawings and documentation

  • Optimize existing products for improved quality, capacity, and cost efficiency

  • Drive Design for Manufacturability (DFM) throughout development: identify issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure new products meet design, quality, and cost targets

  • Manage project timelines and deliverables to ensure on-time, on-plan product launches

  • Research and evaluate materials, components, and emerging technologies for innovative solutions

  • Oversee prototype builds with suppliers and contract manufacturers, ensuring specifications, budget, and schedule are met

  • Administer PLM processes: release prototypes, author assembly/test procedures, and hand off to mass production

  • Source and qualify vendors, suppliers, and contractors; build strategic relationships for global component sourcing

  • Define, procure, and qualify test equipment for product validation and compliance

What You’ll Bring to the Table

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Biomedical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience

  • 7+ years in manufacturing electromechanical products

  • Advanced CAD skills (SolidWorks and PDM preferred)

  • Strong leadership, mentorship, and project-management abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication with internal teams, suppliers, and customers worldwide

  • Expertise in electromechanical assemblies (LCDs, batteries, sensors, flex circuits, PCBs, antennas, buttons)

  • Proficiency in DFM/DFA, statistical tolerance analysis, functional dimensioning, and GD&T

  • Skilled in statistical analysis and data-driven decision making

  • Experience with manufacturing processes (injection molding, sheet metal, stamping, MIM, CNC machining, soft goods) and process validation

  • Familiarity with reliability testing, cosmetic QA, and standard mechanical test methods

  • Track record in product validation (shock/drop, cycle, environmental testing)

  • Experience collaborating with Asian high-volume manufacturing facilities

  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and capable of managing multiple concurrent projects

  • Willingness to travel internationally ~4–5 weeks per year

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in high-volume manufacturing

  • HVAC system knowledge

  • Wireless antenna integration in enclosures (Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi); MID/LDS experience a plus

  • Audio subsystem design (microphones, speakers)

  • Optical or camera system design

  • Thermal modeling and analysis

Just so you know - the hired candidate will be required to complete a background check
