Job Description:

Assurance and Advisory (A&A), CPP Investments’ internal audit group, provides independent and objective assurance to Senior Management and the Audit Committee of CPP Investments over the adequacy and effectiveness of the organization’s governance, risk management, and internal controls. Reporting to the Managing Director, Strategy & Governance, the Director will lead internal audit practice management initiatives across A&A, with a focus on methodology, reporting, planning, and governance practices that enable consistent, high-quality execution. This role is central to ensuring the function delivers effectively on its Audit Plan. The Director will also oversee the preparation and delivery of the annual internal audit opinion, ensuring alignment with professional standards and transparency with senior stakeholders.

Role-Specific Accountabilities:

Assurance & Advisory Execution

  • Lead the maintenance and evolution of A&A’s audit methodology, governance documents, and quality assurance program.
  • Oversee planning activities, including development and monitoring of group objectives, the Audit Plan, resourcing, and budgeting.
  • Manage the preparation and delivery of quarterly and annual reporting on A&A activities to the Audit Committee and senior management.
  • Oversee the preparation and delivery of the annual internal audit opinion.
  • Manage the tracking of audit findings and facilitate follow-up by the audit team.
  • Lead the development and implementation of A&A’s training plan.
  • Oversee the audit management tool (Workiva), ensuring it supports effective execution and reporting of audit activities.
  • Oversee administrative aspects of the function, including drafting internal communications and maintaining the audit intranet page.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to team members on audit methodology and standards.

Business Partnership

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that A&A’s work is well aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Serve as a connector across the organization, embedding enterprise-wide priorities into A&A’s practices.
  • Demonstrate transparency and a “no surprises” approach with senior management and the Audit Committee.

People Leadership

  • Lead and support recruitment and onboarding activities for A&A.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to staff on methodology, standards, and practice management.
  • Foster an inclusive team environment built on trust and a safe-to-speak-up culture.
  • Promote continuous professional development and a mindset of continuous improvement within the team.

Qualifications:

Education & Professional Certifications

  • Undergraduate degree required, preferably in accounting, business, finance, or technology; a postgraduate degree is an asset.
  • CPA/CA and CIA strongly preferred; other relevant designations are an asset.

Professional Experience

  • Experience in internal audit is required; prior experience in a professional practice or methodology role is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with Board and senior management reporting.
  • Knowledge of audit methodologies, standards, and best practices.
  • Experience managing audit reporting cycles and preparing internal audit opinions is an asset.

Personal Competencies

  • Self-managed, flexible, and able to adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Self-motivated with a hands-on approach, while appreciating diversity of thought and opinions.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills, with the ability to simplify and present complex concepts effectively.
