Job Description:

Job Summary

This role supports Active Equities (AE) in developing and executing its multi-year portfolio strategy. The role will contribute to AE capital planning, allocation frameworks, portfolio reviews, and cross-department strategic initiatives to align investment design and execution with strategic objectives. In addition, the role will collaborate with CPP Investments’ External Portfolio Management (EPM) team on select external equity manager partnerships and facilitate the transfer of knowledge into AE’s investment processes.

Team Summary

Our Active Equities mandate is to deliver alpha in the global public equity markets. The department leverages CPP Investments structural competitive advantages and Active Equities sources of edge to exploit alpha opportunities through proprietary company specific fundamental research. Our fundamental insights yield a collection of high-conviction, single-company investments that are assembled into a highly concentrated long/short, market-neutral portfolio via an optimization process that aims to remove unintended factor exposures. The result is a portfolio with maximum exposure to our proprietary research and little else.

The Portfolio Strategy function supports AE in aligning capital allocation, investment design, and operational execution with long-term strategic objectives. The team works across disciplines to enhance investment decision-making and ensure effective coordination with internal and external partners.

Accountabilities

  • Support development and refresh of AE’s multi-year portfolio strategy by gathering data, preparing analyses, and coordinating input from AE teams on return objectives, risk budgets, and investment priorities.
  • Play a key role in AE portfolio management initiatives, including department-level portfolio reviews, capital allocation processes, and decision analysis.
  • Collaborate with AE’s partners (OCIO, Risk, Finance, Operations) to ensure alignment and effective execution of strategy.
  • Lead (or support) major department-level strategic initiatives
  • Contribute to underwriting and monitoring of select external equity hedge fund managers in partnership with EPM, with a focus on building strategic relationships to complement AE processes and playbooks
  • Collaborate effectively with different colleagues; set an example of knowledge sharing.
  • Uphold CPP Investments’ values of integrity, partnership and high performance
Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Business, Mathematics or related field. MBA/CFA/CAIA preferred.
  • 5–8 years’ experience in portfolio strategy, capital planning, or related investment roles; exposure to external manager selection is an asset.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to synthesize quantitative and qualitative inputs into strategic recommendations.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills; ability to distill complex analysis into clear narratives for senior audiences.
  • Excel & PowerPoint mastery; familiarity with quantitative methods, including using SQL and Python for at-scale data analysis.
  • Experience using GenAI tools including ChatGPT or comparable tools to enhance productivity and creativity.

What Sets You Apart

  • Strategic judgment and intellectual curiosity.
  • Proven ability to operate independently and lead cross-functional initiatives.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity; energized by solving novel problems.
  • Inclusive, thoughtful, and candid communicator who builds trust across levels.
  • Committed to institutional learning and driving innovation within a One Fund framework.
  • Willingness to travel (~10–15%) for onsite diligence and industry events.
