Your opportunity:

The Mental Health Nurse (RN) is an integral member of a multidisciplinary team at the University of Toronto Scarborough Health & Wellness Centre. Under the direction of the Team Lead, Clinical Services, Health & Wellness Centre, the Mental Health Nurse provides professional mental health support and primary care in a clinical setting to patients, both in-person and through phone consultations, utilizing the nursing process in accordance with established standards of care, policies and procedures. Inherent in this role are the knowledge, skills and attitudes specific to critical thinking and decision making, as well as the ability to analyze and assess presenting physical and mental health concerns in collaboration with medical, counselling, and administrative team members in the management of these concerns.

The successful candidate is a solution-oriented team player who also works collaborative with health promotion professionals to develop and deliver education and raise awareness related to student mental health support. They possess strong interpersonal skills and have the ability to effectively navigate high impact situations, with diplomacy.


Your responsibilities will include:

 

• Providing initial clinical support and/or counselling to distressed students in crisis and making referrals to appropriate resources
• Assessing the mental health of clients
• Determining the appropriate level of clinical intervention
• Making informed referrals and supporting an individual in distress until referral contact is made
• Liaising with a health care team to facilitate collaboration on cases
• Following rules and procedural processes related to Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA)
• Providing case management support to students with urgent and/or complex problems requiring the coordination of multiple services
• Serving as a resource to others by providing (non-supervisory) job-related guidance

 

Essential Qualifications:

 

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) required. Current registration, in good standing with no practice restrictions, as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Liability insurance or membership in a professional association, which offers liability insurance (ie. RNAO). Certification with Canadian Nursing Association in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing. Current CPR certification.
• Minimum five years of clinical practice in primary health (i.e. family practice, community nursing, occupational nursing, emergency) with significant related experience in mental health.
• Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing experience essential (physical and mental health assessment including psychiatric, crisis and emergency management).
• Experience in a multidisciplinary clinic.
• Experience providing mental health education and training to primary care team professionals.
• Experience working with young adult population.
• Experience with electronic medical health records.
• Strong computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
• Familiarity with the Mental Health Act and its implications for patients and providers.
• Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work professionally and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team environment.

• Hours of Work: 3-5 days/week from 8:45 AM to 5:00 PM, 1-2 days/week from 11:45 AM to 8:00 PM.

USW Pay Band 15 -- $97,348. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $124,491. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
