Description:

The Department of Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Director, Undergraduate Medical Education. Applicants must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the University of Toronto. Successful completion of the Continuing Faculty Appointment Review (CFAR) is required. Preference will be given to applicants at the rank of Assistant Professor or above. The term of the Director, Undergraduate Medical Education appointment is five years with the possibility of one renewal following a successful review. Effective start date is March 1, 2026, or an alternative date as mutually agreed with a transition/mentorship period prior to the start date.

 

Undergraduate Medical Education is a vital function within the Department of Medicine.  The Department is the largest individual contributor to the education of medical students in the Faculty of Medicine, both in terms of numbers of participating faculty and volume of teaching hours. The Director of Undergraduate Medical Education for the Department of Medicine is a leadership position, highly valued and pivotal to the overall success of the Department. The role oversees all educational activities with the Internal Medicine Year 3 and Year 4 clinical clerkships. This includes direction and guidance for curriculum delivery, curriculum innovation, curriculum change, organizational structure, teaching, evaluation, and educational scholarship. 


The Director reports directly to the Vice-Chair, Education or his/her designate and the Departmental Division Director and is also accountable to the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education.

 

The ideal candidate is a respected clinical teacher or educator and innovative leader with well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with an interest in education. A solid track record of scholarship and innovation would be a strong asset.

 

Applicants must hold an MD degree, be a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or be eligible for certification in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and licensure in Ontario.

 

The preferred hospital site for the Director’s clinical activities will be negotiated with the successful candidate and be one of the following fully affiliated University sites: Sinai Health Systems, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (SHSC), St. Michael’s Hospital or University Health Network. The Director for Undergraduate Medical Education will receive an annual stipend from the Department of Medicine in the amount of $45,000 plus HST (if applicable). The Director will have support from an administrative assistant and use team workspace within the Department of Medicine.
