We are seeking a Renewable Energy Lead with technical, project, and leadership experience in BESS, solar PV, wind, and power systems / substations. In this role within our Ontario team. You will lead a team of engineers and technical staff to support the delivery of renewable and storage energy projects. You will be the technical interface with clients, manufacturers, utility/ISO and internal team members. You’ll ensure designs meet performance, safety, regulation, and commercial requirements.

The Opportunity

  • Support business development and prepare proposals with support of technical input from team members, client meetings and cost estimation.
  • Support bid and execution phase design and consulting services within the utility-scale renewable energy sector described above.
  • Lead the day-to-day execution of project engineering scopes of work.  
  • Manage own and supporting team production schedule, change management on Arup bids and project work. 
  • Lead the engineering design, technical strategy, and delivery of renewable energy and storage projects, especially solar PV and BESS, including supporting substation design and integration.
  • Manage full project design lifecycle: feasibility / concept, site development, detailed design, and design related studies.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with clients, Independent System Operators (ISOs), Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs), utilities, and regulatory agencies across Canada and the U.S., facilitating interconnection, grid integration, permitting, market compliance, and transmission planning.
  • Collaborate with equipment manufacturers and vendors to define technical specifications and tailor project-specific requirements.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a multidisciplinary team of engineers, designers, and technical professionals, ensuring high standards of quality, schedule adherence, and budget control.
  • Prepare and critically review technical documentation including reports, specifications, single-line diagrams, electrical modeling, and system protection and control designs, ensuring alignment with project timelines and budget constraints.
  • Direct substation engineering for renewable energy projects, encompassing transformer selection, switchgear configuration, protection and relaying systems, control systems, grounding design, and protection coordination.
  • Foster the professional growth of junior staff by encouraging knowledge sharing, learning from project outcomes, and promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Support the development of team members’ technical expertise, commercial acumen, and interpersonal skills.
  • Champion excellence in project execution, driving high-quality outcomes across all phases of engineering and design.

The Skills

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) in Canada; PE licensure in the United States is preferred.
  • 12 + years of experience in renewable energy engineering, with a focus on solar PV, battery energy storage systems (BESS), substation and power systems design, and grid interconnection.
  • Well-versed in North American ISO/RTO markets, including interconnection processes, market regulations, grid codes, and tariff structures across Canada and the U.S.
  • Hands-on technical knowledge of BESS, inverters, energy management systems (EMS), protection & control, and Power System studies for substation,
  • Experience in substation design, selection of transformers, switchgear, physical design, protection & relaying, control systems, grounding, and preparation of related studies.
  • Experience in solar PV system design, including DC/AC system design, PV array layout, modelling (for example using tools like PVSyst, SAM), cable sizing, power flow analysis.
  • Proven project leadership: managing multi-disciplinary teams, multiple projects, delivering on time, managing budgets.
  • Excellent communication skills — able to interact with clients, regulatory bodies, vendors, and internal stakeholders. Ability to represent the company credibly.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and readiness to travel for site visits, client engagements, and vendor coordination as project needs arise.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage deadlines, and adapt effectively within a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
  • Exceptional communication abilities, essential for effective collaboration in multidisciplinary, team-oriented settings.
  • Effective presentation skills with colleagues and clients of all levels.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, as needed, to achieve agreed goals and results.

Hiring Range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in Toronto is $131,000 to $172,500 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of Toronto will differ.
