Description

About the Role

We are seeking a Zero Waste Subject Matter Expert (SME) to develop instructional content for a high school and internship readiness course. The SME will create engaging, accurate, and workforce-aligned curriculum based on a provided outline (Modules/topics listed in Column B of the project spreadsheet).

Key Responsibilities

The SME will:

  • Write module-based course content aligned to the client’s course objectives
  • Develop clear learning objectives, lesson narratives, and key takeaways
  • Incorporate real-world examples, case studies, and industry context
  • Create student activities/projects to support applied learning
  • Develop assessment support (knowledge checks, quiz questions, final project guidance)
  • Recommend credible resources and references to support course content
  • Ensure content is age-appropriate, engaging, and aligned to certification outcomes
Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated expertise in Zero Waste, sustainability, waste diversion, or circular economy systems
  • Experience with recycling, composting, reuse programs, and/or waste audits
  • Strong understanding of waste infrastructure (landfills, transfer stations, MRFs, etc.)
  • Proven ability to write clear instructional content for student or workforce audiences
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing curriculum or training for certification programs
  • Background working with schools, municipalities, facilities, or sustainability organizations
  • Familiarity with waste policy, procurement practices, and behavior change strategies
  • Sustainability credentials (TRUE, LEED, etc.) a plus
