Assistant Principal, Secondary Counseling Services

 

The Los Angeles Unified School District seeks an outstanding Assistant Principal, Secondary Counseling Services (APSCS) to collaborate with the principal to lead the students, staff, and community at 32ND Street USC Media Arts & Engineering Magnet School towards building paths to graduation, academic excellence, and success beyond secondary school.

 

32nd Street USC Media Arts & Engineering Magnet School is a comprehensive span school in Central Los Angeles adjacent to USC, serving approximately 900 students in grades Kindergarten - 12th. The student population consists of 83% Hispanic students, 21% gifted and talented students, 17% students with disabilities, and 1% emergent bilingual students. 32nd Street operates on a seven-period bell schedule and offers a variety of academic pathways, including a wall-to-wall Magnet program and a robust International Baccalaureate (IB) program. The school is also an AVID National Demonstration Site, demonstrating its commitment to preparing all students for college, career and life. 32nd Street USC is located at 822 West 32nd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90004. We will be temporarily located at the former Downtown Business Magnet as we complete a major modernization project and are slated to return to campus in the 28/29 academic year with a new secondary facility.      

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

Must be data-driven, results-oriented and have: a track record of proven results; strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; extensive knowledge of counseling services and the counseling office, including developing and managing the Master Schedule, student programming, and constructing cohorts; ability to interpret data to inform decisions and plans; the capacity to work independently while meeting commitments and providing detailed updates on progress; strong planning and organizational skills; experience working collaboratively with instructional leaders, staff, students and families; knowledge of effective classroom instruction, pedagogy, and instructional best practices, including a strong understanding of the standards-based instruction and mastery learning, and knowledge of school operations, such as monthly drills, athletics, and the district's comprehensive testing programs. This position also requires active supervision of students, evaluation of teachers, and leading professional development.

SALARY:

40G - B Basis ($116,751 – $145,407) – 221 paid days

  • For employees who change basis during the school year, this basis change may prevent them from earning a full year of service credit.  
  • For an annualized employee who is changing basis during the year, this change may result in an annualized “settlement” (i.e., the process by which the District resolves an under or overpayment).
  • Selected individual may be subject to displacement due to norm allocation and seniority based RIF provisions or due to budget limitations.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (PUBLIC SCHOOL SETTING):

  • Five years of successful full-time public school district certificated service
  • A minimum of three years of experience as a teacher in a K-12 program
  • No fewer than two years of successful experience in a middle/senior high school counseling office

 

Employees who have been issued a below-standard Performance Evaluation, or Notice of Unsatisfactory Act(s) and/or Suspension, shall be ineligible for application to any promotion process for one calendar year following the issuance of such a Notice

  • A valid California teaching credential requiring a Bachelor's degree and a program of professional preparation, including student teaching
  • A valid California Administrative Services Credential; applicants who do not possess a valid California Administrative Services Credential may be eligible to participate in the LAUSD Preliminary Administrative Services Credential Intern Program designed specifically for the APSCS position
  • A valid Pupil Personnel Services Credential
  • A Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university      
  • District Master Plan requirements*                   Multicultural coursework

 

*Candidates have one year to complete this requirement

 

For all school based administrative positions, candidates must be in the appropriate LAUSD eligible pool for the position or currently serving in the class for which they are applying.  In order to be placed in the eligible pool, candidates must successfully complete the appropriate LAUSD Aspiring Administrator Program.  Qualified applicants not in an eligible pool from within or outside LAUSD may be considered if fewer than five applicants from the eligible pool apply for the position.
