Summary:
The Academic Success Advisor (retention emphasis) is responsible for the development and implementation of services and programming supporting students struggling to remain enrolled. This includes providing leadership and direction by collaborating with campus and community partners to deliver services that enhance the success potential of students who are struggling academically. The person in this role will also work closely with dual and concurrently enrolled students.
Responsibilities:
The Academic Success Advisor is responsible for the administration of support services and programming for students struggling with attendance and completion of academic work. The person in this role provides individualized, holistic case management with the goal of resolving issues impacting academic progress as well as relevant campus programing initiatives. Additionally, the Academic Success Advisor serves an essential role in supporting retention efforts through the advisement of General Studies majors, new students, and dual/concurrent enrolled students. The Academic Success Advisor also provides academic coaching and assistance with other retention programming. This position reports to the Director of Student Success.
Position Duties
Administer case management services to students struggling with academics and/or consistent attendance. This includes regular check-ins, monitoring progress, developing an action plan to improve success, and communicating with faculty/administration when appropriate.
Support the academic advising of dual and concurrent students as needed.
Provide retention support services including general studies advising, new student advising, and academic coaching.
Administer and oversee institutional retention management strategies in service of institutional strategic enrollment management efforts. This includes campus wide communications to staff and students.
Maintain accurate notes of students seen and duties performed; maintain appointment statistics and analyze data toward improvement of services and student outcomes.
Maintain knowledge of retention best practices including those impacting underserved student populations.
Collaborate with campus and community stakeholders including CC employees, nonprofits, and government organizations.
In collaboration with the Admissions, Student Success, Records, and Financial Aid, support new student orientation and other campus events.
Support and assist team members in the execution of prospective and current student programming or services.
Serve the broader mission of the college and Student Services by serving on campus committees and attending student events.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in education, school or mental health counseling, social work, or other closely related fields, OR a Bachelor's degree plus two years of experience working in higher education, counseling, psychology, education, social work or other closely related fields
Ability to use active listening and sound judgment to help make decisions and find solutions to complex problems
Ability to work in a collaborative environment
Excellent communication skills and the ability to relate to various populations
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with college students
Experience with case management
Experience working with disadvantaged populations
Experience with program planning and implementation
Other Qualifications
Work Environment:
Typical work environment is an office setting requiring normal safety precautions. Work is usually performed during the normal work day, however, occasional early morning, late evening and weekend work may be required. Short periods of time will be spent outdoors traveling between campus buildings in various weather conditions. Due to busy seasons, there will be specific times of crucial availability when leave time may not be approved.
Physical Demands:
Employee is regularly required to sit, speak, hear, use hands and fingers to handle materials and use computer, feel, and reach with hands and arms. Occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds may be required; less frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds may be required.
