Job Description

About the Department

The Accounting and Tax Compliance Manager provides advanced professional accounting, tax compliance, and financial reporting support for the University. This position is responsible for key tax filings, external reporting, fixed asset and debt accounting, year-end close support, and other complex accounting functions. The role requires strong technical accounting knowledge, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple reporting deadlines in a higher education or nonprofit environment.

The Accounting and Tax Compliance Manager also supports the Controller and Assistant Controller with audit preparation, interim and annual financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and process improvement initiatives. This position supervises the Budget Analyst and works collaboratively with departments across the University to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant financial information.

Position Duties

Tax Compliance, Regulatory Reporting, and External Reporting
  • Coordinate and support preparation of the University’s annual Form 990 and related tax schedules.
  • Oversee annual foreign person U.S. tax reporting, including Forms 1042, 1042-T, and 1042-S.
  • Monitor and support compliance with foreign tax matters and related reporting requirements.
  • Prepare, review, and file monthly sales tax reporting.
  • Assist with NCAA audit preparation and EADA annual survey reporting.
  • Support Standard & Poor’s rating review and other external financial information requests.
Maintain documentation and schedules to support tax, audit, regulatory, and external reporting requirements.

  • Assist the Controller and Assistant Controller with interim and annual financial statements.
  • Support annual audit preparation, including preparation of schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
  • Oversee fixed asset accounting, including capitalization, depreciation, disposals, and related reporting.
  • Maintain debt accounting schedules and support related financial statement disclosures.
  • Assist with year-end closing activities and ensure assigned areas are completed accurately and timely.
  • Research and resolve complex accounting issues using generally accepted accounting principles and institutional policies.

  • Supervise the Budget Analyst, including assigning work, reviewing performance, providing guidance, and supporting professional development.
  • Serve as a resource to Business Office staff and campus departments on assigned accounting and compliance matters.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • At least five years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Experience with federal and state reporting and compliance requirements.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Public Accountant license or CPA candidate strongly preferred.
  • Experience in higher education, nonprofit accounting, public accounting, or a complex fund-accounting environment.
  • Experience with Form 990, sales tax, 1042/1042-S reporting, fixed assets, debt accounting, audit schedules, or external financial reporting.
  • Experience supervising staff.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems used in higher education or nonprofit finance.

Years of Experience:
At least five years’ experience in accounting, preferably non-profit.  Knowledgeable of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and federal and state reporting and compliance.  

Certification and/or Licensure:
Certified Public Accountant license or CPA candidate strongly preferred.

  • Strong technical accounting, analytical, and reconciliation skills.
  • Ability to interpret financial information, identify issues, and recommend practical solutions.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to organize work, manage competing deadlines, and shift quickly among multiple priorities.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Ability to evaluate and process forms, verify data for accuracy and completeness, and ensure compliance with established procedures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, campus departments, auditors, external partners, and University leadership.

  • Willingness to accept supervision, assignments, change, and feedback.

Working Conditions / Physical requirements:
Standard office environment. Regular use of a computer and exposure to video display screens. The position requires the ability to sit for extended periods, communicate effectively, and use standard office equipment. Occasional extended hours may be required during audit, tax, budget, or year-end close periods.
