Job Description

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibility for performing paraprofessional technical work involving the maintenance and reporting of financial accounting data. This includes maintenance of appropriate accounts, ledgers, journals, registers, and other financial records, reconciliation of various financial statements and documents, processing of various transactions for payment of invoices or expense vouchers, maintenance and processing of payroll data, and the preparation of routine or standard reports concerning financial operations and data.

Typical Functions

The functions performed in this job family will vary by level, unit and organization, but may include the following:

  • Maintains accounting records including ledgers, journals, registers, and individual accounts; classifies and codes revenues and expenditures for entry into appropriate accounting records.

  • Reviews and reconciles various financial transactions; examines invoices, expense vouchers and other source documents to verify obligations and post appropriate records.

  • Prepares financial reports, statements and schedules of standard design.

  • Maintains files of source documents and other information related to accounting activities.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned consistent with the responsibilities of the position and agency operations.

Level Descriptor

Levels are distinguished based on the complexity of assigned duties, the level of expertise required for completion of work assignments, and the responsibility assigned for the supervision of others.

This is the specialist level of this job family where employees are assigned responsibility for performing advanced technical accounting work. This may include independent responsibility for maintaining all accounting records of a small fiscal unit or performing independent advanced specialized accounting tasks in a fiscal division which is large in scope with several phases of accounting activity, such as separate accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll functions.

Education and Experience

Education and Experience required at this level consists of one year of clerical, bookkeeping, or technical accounting experience plus three years of experience in performing technical accounting work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting completion of six semester hours in accounting or bookkeeping at an accredited college or university for each six months of the required experience; or the completion of a vocational training course in accounting for the one year only of the required clerical, bookkeeping or technical accounting experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

Knowledge Skills and Abilities required to perform work at this level include knowledge of accounting procedures and terminology, and of business arithmetic, of modern office methods and procedures.

Ability is required in the use of office equipment such as calculators, personal computers or computer keyboards, and copiers; in the maintenance and reporting of financial accounting data; and to work independently and perform a wide range of technical accounting functions.

Candidates must possess sufficient proficiency in the English language to perform the essential functions of the position.
