About the Department


About the Position:

Palo Alto Children’s Theatre seeks an Arts & Science Professional III - H Teaching Artist to support year-round education and theatre outreach efforts, both onsite at the Children’s Theatre and in PAUSD Elementary Schools. Duties of the teaching artist may include: 

  • Teaching year round classes or summer camps, with curriculum designed to serve participants in the range of age 5 through high school. Subject areas may include vocal lessons, music appreciation, story telling, acting, playwriting, or classical text.
  • From time to time leading school field trip tours of the Children’s Theatre. The tours include hands-on learning opportunities and theatre-games.
  • Directing Theatrical Productions onsite at the Children's Theatre or in PAUSD schools

Work Hours and Schedule: This is an hourly position with an average of 20 hours per week. Must have a flexible schedule and availability to work afternoons, evenings, and weekends for classes and rehearsals.

This is an SEIU Hourly (limited-benefits) position that is budgeted to not exceed 1,000 hours per fiscal year. The number of hours per week and schedule will be determined based on assignment. 


About Palo Alto Children’s Theatre: Palo Alto Children’s Theatre exists to nurture the intellectual, artistic, and personal development of youth through multi-arts education, performing opportunities, and extraordinary theatre experiences. At the Children's Theatre, the process and product are of equal importance in creating excellent theatre for young audiences. Through multi-arts education, the Children’s Theatre develops lifelong skills such as critical and creative thinking, cooperation, and aesthetic sensitivity. A theatre and an educational institution, the Children’s Theatre provides classes and programming designed to provide hands-on learning experiences for youth aged 3 through high school. This invaluable teaching tool develops skills and provides an excellent opportunity to develop participants’ theatrical knowledge. Performing arts education opportunities include onsite classes, camps and production experiences, as well as theatrical Outreach Productions (grades 4-5), Joy of Singing (grades 2-3) and Dance In Schools classes (grades K-3) in all twelve PAUSD Elementary Schools.

Position Duties

  • Instruction and oversight of youth education participants in both classes and theatrical productions;
  • Coordination with theatre staff to keep updated administrative paperwork needed for classes and productions;
  • Coordination with parents or schools, for scheduling classes and tours. 

Minimum Qualifications


Five years of experience equivalent to that of and A&S Professional II. 
This position may require lifting up to 15 pounds.

Instructional & Curriculum Expertise

  • Diverse Age Group Experience: Proven track record of teaching and managing classrooms across a wide age spectrum.
  • Multi-Disciplinary Theatre Background: Demonstrated ability to teach multiple theatrical disciplines.
  • Curriculum Adaptability: Experience implementing or adapting structured arts education curricula for both traditional year-round classes and intensive summer camp environments.
Directing & Production Leadership
  • Youth Theatre Directing: Prior experience directing theatrical productions specifically tailored for young actors and youth audiences.

  • Outreach & Onsite Production Management: Ability to direct and coordinate productions across varying environments, ranging from fully equipped onsite theatre spaces to adaptive spaces within local elementary schools (PAUSD).

Engagement & Outreach Skills
  • Community & School Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills necessary to serve as an effective liaison and representative of the Children’s Theatre while working directly within local public schools.

Medical Stipend
