Responsible for athletic events, games and practices of assigned sports; stays available in case of injury to athlete. Provides first aid and emergency care to injured athletes; provides first-line evaluation and assessment of injury or illness.
Initial screening will begin Wednesday, July 15, 2027 and will occur every Wednesday thereafter until filled.
Responsibilities
- Perform injury and illness prevention, evaluation, management, treatment, and rehabilitation for assigned student-athletes.
- Provide on-site first aid and emergency medical coverage for practices, competitions, training sessions, and team travel.
- Design, implement, and progress individualized rehabilitation programs to facilitate safe and effective return to play.
- Apply preventive taping, bracing, and protective equipment to reduce injury risk and support injured athletes.
- Administer therapeutic modalities and manual interventions as part of comprehensive injury management plans.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential medical records, including medical histories, waivers, injury reports, and treatment documentation, in accordance with institutional, NCAA, and HIPAA standards.
- Coordinate care with Team Physicians and medical specialists, including referrals, follow-ups, and return-to-participation clearance.
- Coordinate and facilitate transportation for student-athletes to medical appointments, rehabilitation services, and diagnostic testing.
- Utilize professional knowledge and clinical expertise to educate student-athletes and staff, promote risk management, and support safe performance and functional movement.
- Communicate and reinforce safe practice policies, procedures, and injury-prevention standards to coaches, student-athletes, and administrative personnel.
- Apply standardized medical care procedures and clearly communicate evaluation findings, treatment plans, and return-to-participation outcomes with supervisors, coaching staff, and appropriate medical personnel to ensure coordinated care.
- Coordinate the emergency management team/pit crew and conduct emergency action plan reviews and walk-throughs with coaches, team managers, and support staff to ensure readiness and effective response.
- Assist in the identification, coordination, and follow-up of nutritional and mental health needs, ensuring appropriate education, referrals, and continuity of care for student-athletes in collaboration with qualified professionals.
- Assist with inventory management of medical supplies and equipment in the main athletic training facility and the assigned satellite facility.
- Assist with receiving, stocking, distribution, and maintenance of medical equipment and nutritional products.
- Conduct yearly review and update of Emergency Action Plan for assigned facility.
- Maintain inventory and monthly compliance records of emergency supplies for assigned facility.
- Supervise and conduct performance evaluations of student assistants.
- Assist with the recruitment and hiring process of athletic training fellows within the Sports Medicine Department.
- Actively contribute to the Student-Athlete Performance and Wellness Support (PAWS) program by collaborating across sport performance disciplines, supporting interdisciplinary performance and wellness initiatives.
- Participate in the Sports Medicine Policy review and update process.
- Maintain BOC certification, State of Tennessee Licensure, and CPR/AED certification, while remaining current with best practices and emerging trends in athletic training through continuing education and review of industry-specific publications.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant area and two (2) years of appropriate experience; OR Master's Degree in a relevant area. Temporary, internship, GA, or fellowship experience acceptable.
Must possess and maintain the following:
Certifications – BOC and CPR/AED/First Aid certifications
Licensure - State of Tennessee Athletic Training (or eligible to obtain licensure within 90 days of hire); Valid driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to perform injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation techniques
- Knowledge of emergency response procedures and concussion management protocols.
- Skill in maintaining accurate medical records and communicating clinical information effectively.
- Knowledge of therapeutic modality treatments
- Knowledge of preventative taping and/or bracing
- Ability and knowledge to design and perform rehabilitation exercise programs
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with athletes, coaches, physicians, and staff.
- Ability to travel and work evenings/weekends
