DIMENSIONS/SCOPE OF POSITION:
The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in managing the organization’s accounting operations and provides day-to-day leadership over payroll, accounts payable, purchasing, and selected accounting processes. In a healthcare environment, this role helps ensure timely close support, operational reporting, policy compliance, staff accountability, and continuity of department operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee daily accounting operations and support execution of the monthly and annual close.
- Supervise the Payroll, Accounts Payable, and Purchasing teams to ensure timely, accurate, and policy-compliant processing.
- Review payroll reconciliations, AP activity, vendor controls, purchasing workflow compliance, and expense coding accuracy.
- Assist with journal entries, reconciliations, variance analyses, and preparation of financial schedules.
- Prepare and review operational and financial reports for leadership.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, procedure documentation, and internal control improvements.
- Coordinate with HR, operations, and department leaders on payroll, spending requests, and workflow issues.
- Serve as backup to the Controller and provide coverage for accounting leadership needs.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Payroll, Accounts Payable, Purchasing (May supervise accounting staff as assigned)
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting of finance required.
- 5-8 years of progressive accounting or finance experience required.
- 2-3+ yeas of supervisory experience.
- Healthcare, physician practice, multi-site, or healthcare services experience strongly preferred.
- CPA preferred but not required.
- Strong knowledge of payroll processes, AP controls, purchasing workflows, financial reporting, ERP systems, and Excel.

Certificates, Licenses:
Other Skills and Abilities: Proven working experience as a Financial Controller. Thorough knowledge of GAAP and Cash Basis. Experience with creating financial statements. Experience in general ledger functions and the month-end/year end close process. Excellent accounting software user and administration skills. Excellent communication and leadership skills. Ability to plan, multi-task and manage time effectively; Able to listen and respond well to questions and feedback.
