Under the supervision of the Director of Shelter Services, the Assistant Director of Shelter Services is responsible for the administration and oversight of Urban Peak’s Young Adult and Neighborhood Shelter Programs. This role provides leadership and operational support to ensure successful delivery of Young Adult Shelter services and provides clear expectations, communication channels, and support throughout the teams to align the day, evening and overnight shifts. The Assistant Director of Shelter Services will assist in program oversight, quality assurance, staff supervision, and coordination of Shelter services requirements and compliance. In the absence of the Director of Shelter Services, the Assistant Director of Shelter Services assumes full responsibility for program operations and decision-making to ensure continuity of services.
The Assistant Director of Shelter Services provides leadership and supervision to a team of Program Managers and Life-skills Managers responsible for supporting youth experiencing homelessness in both Urban Peak’s Young Adult and Neighborhood Shelter programs at all times of the day and night. This role directly supervises the assigned Program Managers to ensure programmatic procedures are being followed for effective service delivery, and the coordination of youth moving from the Young Adult Shelter up into the Neighborhoods in an effective, appropriate, and timely manner.
This position supports the Director of Shelter Services with the oversight and management of related grants and funding sources, including budget management, data entry and analysis, and outcomes. In partnership with the Director of Strategic Initiatives, the Assistant Director also supports the Youth Leadership Cohorts and ensures that youth voice is informing procedures and policies, and that youth voice is collected at various stages of program enrollments as well as in various settings. This position will also ensure that staff’s interactions and engagements around youth expectations and managing behaviors is in line with Urban Peak’s mission, is equitable, restorative, and trauma-informed. This position is also responsible for supporting and responding to emergency situations, de-escalation, crisis intervention, and supporting employees through these situations.
This position will ensure compliance with all policies, grants, and best practices to ensure that youth receive the best possible care and services. This position will ensure that interactions, interventions, and environments at Urban Peak are trauma-informed and emphasize the physical and emotional safety of youth and staff.
Who You Are:
- Master’s degree in education, business, communication or a related field and a minimum of two (2) years of experience working with youth OR a Bachelor’s degree in a human services or a related field and three (3) years’ related work experience and two (2) years’ supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience OR six (6) years’ experience working with Runaway Homeless Youth, At-risk Youth, or relevant experience with Young Adults or Adults.
- Experience with youth experiencing homelessness and/or residential supervision preferred
- Experience with case management and supervising other case managers is preferred
- Ability to connect and work effectively with a diverse youth population
- The ability to connect well, work effectively, and communicate in a culturally responsive manner with a diverse youth population
- An understanding of trauma-informed interactions and/or a willingness to learn and adopt this approach
- Ability and desire to work within a crisis intervention agency
- Ability to use second language in written and verbal communication desired (Spanish, Vietnamese, ASL) preferred but not required.
- Lived experience reflective of the youth we serve is encouraged but not required.
- Team-oriented and able to coordinate with various departments and staff.
- Computer proficient and possess experience of Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
- Must be insurable as a driver on Urban Peak’s auto liability policy to conduct business on behalf of the agency or transport youth using an Urban Peak vehicle and an approved personal vehicle.
- Ability to pass both federal and state background checks.
- Ability to pass pre-employment TB Screening and a pre-employment physical examination.

What You Will Do:
Program Oversight
- Oversees the operations of Young Adult Shelter and Neighborhood programs, including effective service delivery, supporting youth moving throughout the Shelter spaces on the 1st and 2nd/3rd floors, and effective staff supervision and communication among all shifts, 24/7.
- Bridges gap between Young Adult Shelter and Neighborhood beds to ensure continuity of services and streamlined movement between programs, and quickly identifying appropriate youth to transition.
- Provide support and ensure that programming is offered for youth consistently throughout the Mothership, as well as incorporating youth voice into program procedures and best practices and asking youth for feedback about polices.
- Support Program Managers with planning and coordinating new hire training and shadowing.
- Stay up to date with information in the Communication Log. Ensure staff are following protocols.
- Plan and facilitate staff retreats, relevant staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities.
- Supports Director in Overseeing relevant Federal, State and City grants, including attending regularly scheduled grant meetings, oversee budgets, referrals, data entry, and outcomes in accordance with each grant’s requirements
- Collaborate with internal departments and external partners to ensure effective Shelter services are being provided, along with wraparound services for youth, and messaging about services to external partners.
- Ensure Program Manual material is up to date, as well as youth handbook to ensure accuracy as necessary
- Provide appropriate emergency interventions, as needed, and/or guide staff in providing such intervention
- Work directly with youth and/or Program Managers, as needed, to support the youth’s case plans and assist them in managing relationships/behavior
- Work closely with other staff and agency programs to coordinate activities, providing clear and effective communication with other staff regarding clients
- Provide crisis intervention, phone counseling and support as necessary
- The person in this position frequently communicates with Clients who have inquiries about polices and procedures. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations and to help Program Managers resolve grievances
Quality Assurance
- Conduct quality assurance reviews of data entry in Salesforce, analyzing reports, and ensure regular program documentation.
- In conjunction with the Director of Shelter Services, the ADoSS will assist with maintaining compliance with all Shelter grants and grant requirements, participate in audits and monitoring visits as needed.
- Responsible for HMIS and Salesforce completeness and quality assurance of electronic and hard copy youth files
- Ensure accurate program intakes and recording of client services
Supervision
- Assumes the duties of the Director of Shelter Services in their absence, including program oversight, staff supervision, and decision making.
- Works closely with HR and the Director of Shelter Services to ensure timely communication and agency policies are being upheld.
- Coordinates Life-skills Managers full-times schedules with the Director of Shelter Services to ensure effective coverage throughout the building.
- Ensure coordination between the Young Adult Program Manager, Overnight Program Manager, and Neighborhood Program Manager to create a seamless youth experience and sustainable systems.
- Effectively supervises and manages direct reports and provides, by example and leadership, motivation and direction to employees of the organization
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable state and federal employment laws
- Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; recognizing and rewarding employees; corrective disciplinary procedures and practices under the direction of Senior Leadership; addressing complaints and resolving problems
- Ensures annual employee performance reviews are conducted in a timely and effective manner. Evaluates the performance of employees for compliance with established policies and objectives of the organization, and contributions to attaining objectives
- Helps set the tone of the department to ensure morale, teamwork, and that the positive employment culture of the organization is maintained.
- Regularly schedules department and staff 1:1 meetings to provide leadership, development, and a forum for communication to ensure coordination and collaboration in meeting organizational and individual goals
- Manage program and grant budgets and report monthly variances to supervisor and Director of Finance

Founded in 1988, Urban Peak is the only non-profit organization in Denver that provides a full convergence of services for youth ages 12 through 24 experiencing homelessness or at imminent risk of becoming homeless.
