About the Department

The City of Norfolk's Department of Parks and Recreation is currently seeking an Athletics Groundskeeper. The Athletics Groundskeeper will be responsible for performing a variety of skilled tasks in connection with the maintenance of athletic fields and stadium grounds. Work involves performing specialized and exacting duties in marking and otherwise preparing the field for football, baseball, soccer, field hockey, field events for track and other sports. Operates and maintains vehicles and equipment.

Position Duties
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Measures and marks football fields, pads and erects goal posts in appropriate position; places flags and other field markers prior to games; sets up player benches and communication head sets before games; issues sideline chairs and markers to game officials.
- Measures and marks fields for baseball; sets bases and home plate in proper alignment and constructs pitcher's mound using proper dimensions.
- Measures and marks fields for other sporting events such as soccer, rugby, football and field events for track.
- Mows, fertilizes, waters edges, sods aerates, top-dresses and performs related turf maintenance duties on athletic fields; and grades fields.
- Performs watering, cultivating, aerating, pruning and planting a variety of turf, trees, and shrubs.
- Applies fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers.
- Operates equipment such as power mowers, power edgers, sod cutters, aerator, turf sweeper, backpack blower, rollers, spray rigs, skip loaders, trucks, equipment and tools.
- May perform public contact and liaison work with concessionaires, general managements and representatives, players, the public and others in the handling of operational problems at events.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of high school or possession of GED certificate.
3-6 months experience in preparation of athletic fields.
Valid Driver's License required
Registered Pesticide Technician for Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification required within six (6) months of employment.
CPR/First Aid Certification within six (6) months of employment.
Other Qualifications
Work Hours: M-F 6:30 am - 3:00 pm, work hours are subject to change, may be subject to work weekend as needed

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
- The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
