Position Summary
The Billing Specialist is responsible for conducting insurance follow ups on all claims, billing claims and answering patient’s billing questions as needed. As a cross-trained team member, this position will also be expected to float into other areas of the Business Office as directed.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Manages billing for Breckenridge Medical Center and Business Office at Stephens Memorial Hospital
- Runs multiple reports as necessary on AthenaHealth
- Bill all primary insurances, Medicare or Medicaid
- Responsible to assure that all claims billed electronically have been accepted by Medicare/Medicaid or other primary insurances as requested
- Follow all policies and procedures set forth by the hospital.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of all rules and guidelines that are needed to properly and professionally complete job duties.
- Drops claims from previous day
- Creates list of encounters not completed by Provider/ Missing Slips
- Reviews Work Bucket, Work List, Claims on Hold, MNGR Hold, and denials no later than 72 hours
- Scans and uploads EOB’s to Athena for posting
- Assists patients with billing questions
- Reviews monthly collection accounts
- Assists with claim reporting as assigned
- Any other duties assigned by the Director of Business Office

- Displays excellent customer service skills when interacting with patients
- Gives detailed guidance to the scheduling, reception, and management departments
- Verifies benefits and monitors payments
- establishing payment arrangements with patients
- Follows up with insurance companies
- connecting with patients when payment lapses occur
Employment requirements
- 4 year High School Diploma
- Minimum of 1-2 years of clinic billing experience strongly preferred
- Athena experience strongly preferred
- Experience in Medicare Billing strongly preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Basic computer skills required including MS Office knowledge
- Ability to remain stationary behind a computer screen for extended periods of time
- Demonstrate written and verbal communication skills, which elicit positive and productive outcomes

Work Environment: Rarely be exposed to toxic/caustic chemicals, hazardous materials and waste; rarely work near moving mechanical parts, exposed to wet, humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electric shock or vibration. This position is classified as an OSHA category 3 position: rarely exposed to a specific hazard.
