NASHVILLE ELECTRIC SERVICE

NOTICE OF VACANCIES

CARPENTER APPRENTICE

(Current openings are in the Construction and Maintenance Section of the Power System Operations Department)

 

1. Minimum Certification Requirements
High School diploma or General Education Diploma is required.

One year of experience in carpentry or concrete form work is required.

  • Employees must not have a positive drug or alcohol test result within the past 12 months prior to a job posting.
  • Employees must not have any disciplinary actions that include suspension without pay within the past 12 months prior to the job posting. The disciplinary action date is defined as the first day of suspension.
  • Employees must have at least a "2.5" overall job performance on their last performance appraisal.
  • Employees must have taken and passed the most recent Safety Manual Test to certify for any job that would be a promotion.

2. Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

1. Assist in building, installing, and maintaining manholes, transformer vaults, and switch pads.

2. Assist in forming, installing, and finishing concrete, including inner steel rebar structure. Assist in the operation of welders  as needed to complete concrete pad inner rebar structure.

3. Assist in installing and repairing energized and de-energized, primary and secondary ductwork in the system.

4. Learn to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, maps, and schematics to perform work.

5. Learn to install and maintain masonry, rock walls, and brick, sidewalks, and pavers across the system.

6. Assist in installing and grounding padmount transformer pads, manholes, vaults, vista vaults, switch pads, and ductwork.

7. Assist in building, installing, and maintaining facilities, structures and buildings owned by the electric utility.

8. Learn to Operate small cranes, aerial devices, and bucket trucks to construct and maintain facilities in the electric distribution system. Learn to use hand tools: hammers,  
    circular saw, reciprocating saw, nail guns, and grinders, and digital theodolite and other precision grading instruments. 

9. Learn to inspect and assist contractors in duct installations and corrections, manhole and vault installation, proper ground of installation, and proofing of pipe once installed.

10. Assist in pulling of deenergized cables and/or telecom fiber cables. Reseal vault lids. Install shoring per pre-ditch inspection.

11. Complete training program for Carpenter Apprentice, including written materials and/or on the job training.

12. Routine exposure to high and low voltages in performing job tasks. Work in close contact with hazardous materials, I.E, mold, and silica.

13. Perform work in a safe manner to protect employees, the public, and property
 

3. Working Conditions
The working environment of this job includes physical surroundings that are undesirable.  There is regular or extreme exposure to multiple disagreeable elements or hazards.  This job demands heavy physical effort.  Frequently moves or lifts heavy objects (50 pounds or more).  Requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as standing, walking, climbing, crouching or crawling in restricted spaces for extended periods.

4. Additional Requirements
Note:  The selection process for this position will involve behavioral interviews.

Subject to 24-hour call.


5. Special Licensing and Certification
Must have or be able to attain a commercial driver’s license from state of residence in accordance with state law.  Must be able to pass a physical abilities test.

 NOTE:
The current Minimum rate is $31.68 per hour, and the Maximum rate is $44.77 per hour.
