Cathodic Protection Technician


***The starting pay rate for this position is $38.13, followed by an increase to $40.03 after completing probation (typically, six months).
 

Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking a skilled Cathodic Protection Technician to support the safety, reliability, and integrity of our natural gas pipeline system. In this role, you will inspect, install, troubleshoot, test, and maintain galvanic cathodic protection systems designed to prevent corrosion on natural gas pipelines. You will also conduct atmospheric corrosion inspections of above-ground piping and associated facilities.

In addition to field responsibilities, you will maintain and update corrosion management databases, review and submit survey reports, monitor project progress, and coordinate follow-up corrective actions as needed. This position requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to manage data and project documentation effectively while supporting regulatory compliance and system integrity initiatives.

What Else Will You be Doing?

  • Conducting pipe-to-soil inspections on short, isolated Cathodic Protection systems
  • Maintaining accurate and complete records in our databases (e.g., GIS, Maximo)
  • Installing, inspecting, repairing, and analyzing pipeline coatings
  • Ensuring proper maintenance of all applicable systems, including usability and reliability of equipment, instruments, and maps
  • Assisting with cathodic protection and corrosion-related troubleshooting and design surveys
  • Conducting routine galvanic Cathodic Protection system maintenance, installing drive-in anodes, making or repairing mechanical and electrical connections.
  • Troubleshooting cathodic protection system anomalies and scheduling and performing required repairs
  • Testing cathodic protection systems using a variety of test methods (e.g., current requirements, isolation/insulator tests, and system continuity tests)
  • Reading, adjusting, modifying, installing, repairing, and replacing cathodic protection components
  • Requires frequent interaction with customers, both internal and external, as a routine part of daily job responsibilities


Who You Are

  • Demonstrated experience in the utility construction, maintenance, and service of pipelines OR pipeline electronic instrument and control systems is valued
  • Possession of an AMPP / NACE Basic Corrosion Course Credential is preferred, or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire is required
  • Possession of a valid, unrestricted driver's license is required - this job requires operating Colorado Springs Utilities vehicles as an essential job function
  • Based on the above licensing requirements and position-specific responsibilities, the position may be subject to Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA)/Department of Transportation DOT random drug & alcohol testing.

     

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Exerts 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or 25-50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or 10-20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions, and intense noise.
