Science Olympiad Coach
Science Focus Program
Science Focus Program in LPS is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable individual to serve as a Part-Time Science Olympiad Coach for the high school team. This critical role involves mentoring talented students, fostering an appreciation for STEM, and preparing the team for local, regional, and state competitions. The ideal candidate has a strong background in science, engineering, or education and is passionate about student success.
The Science Olympiad Coach will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

Team Leadership: Lead and manage the high school Science Olympiad team of approximately 15-25 students.

Event Preparation: Guide students in preparing for all competition events (both building/lab and study/testing events), providing subject-specific expertise, training materials, and practice exams.

Mentorship: Inspire students and help them develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.

Schedule & Logistics: Coordinate and oversee weekly practice sessions, potentially including weekend build sessions, following a schedule determined with the team and school advisor.

Competition Travel: Attend and supervise the team during competitions, which may include local tournaments, Regional, and State competitions (potential weekends).

Resource Management: Manage equipment, materials, and a small budget allocated for team supplies and competition fees.

Collaboration: Work closely with the school's faculty advisor and administration to ensure compliance with school policies.
Qualifications

Experience: Demonstrated knowledge of a broad range of high school-level science and engineering concepts.

Skills: Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.

Commitment: Availability to commit to the part-time schedule (see below) through the competition season (typically November - April).

Background Check: Must be able to pass a standard criminal background check.
Preferred

Prior experience as a competitor, coach, or event supervisor for Science Olympiad or similar academic competitions (e.g., Science Bowl, Robotics).

Experience working with high school-aged students in a mentoring or teaching capacity.
Schedule and Compensation

Time Commitment: Approximately 1-2 hours per week (flexible based on the season's needs).

Example Schedule: One to two after-school sessions (1 hours each) and occasional weekend build/review sessions.

Term: October through Early May

Compensation: Seasonal stipend
