Job Summary

Services, maintains, repairs, cleans test, adjusts, removes, constructs and operates electrical systems, equipment, machinery, control systems, UPS systems, emergency power systems, laboratory systems and alarm systems. Works under supervision or independently and with other trades, contracted personnel or research staff. Knowledgeable in electrical theory, codes requirements, procedures and techniques in safely performing assigned duties. Works with up to medium voltage circuits.

 

This position is onsite, located at our West Jefferson, OH campus.

Responsibilities

  • Installs and maintains a variety of electrical equipment including fixtures, conductors, raceway systems, grounding systems, panel-boards, transformers, motors, controls, over-current protection, fire detection and alarm systems, appliances, communications systems, actuating devices, security-related components, and other equipment. Maintains an adequate inventory of spare parts, monitors system performance and demand to ensure compliance with safety and energy savings guidelines.
  • Maintains records of test reports, blueprints, as built plans, and other documentation, and reports on the status of assigned equipment maintenance, repairs, capacities and efficiency to the supervisor. Prepares written requirements for repairs or for ordering parts from a supplier. Develops work procedures which identify tasks/steps and conducts hazard analysis.
  • Examines and tests elements of electrical systems to locate faults, defects, and unsafe conditions. Coordinates with other facility's staff and contractor's staff to accomplish work on new and renovated labs, and ensures compliance with applicable Battelle guidelines as well as national, state, and local regulations and requirements.
  • Maintains good working relationships with staff and internal customers by displaying positive outlook and friendly relationships.
  • Corrects problems in electrical systems by troubleshooting circuits, replacing defective equipment such as over-current protection, wiring, motors, starters, and other related electrical parts, and removing items from the power supply to halt unsafe operation.
  • May provide direction to lower-level staff or contractors as assigned to assist on related work.
  • Orders parts and supplies as needed. Generates data on materials and time required to accomplish specific tasks for use in estimates; accurately records data regarding materials and time expended in appropriate logs.
  • Performs special tasks requiring similar duties and responsibilities, as assigned.
  • Implements an effective preventive maintenance program using the site's computerized maintenance management system (CMMS); performs preventive/predictive maintenance, repairs and adjustments on systems and controls, monitors and records effectiveness of maintenance activities and takes corrective actions.

Key Qualifications

  • Must understand and apply knowledge of regulatory codes and requirements, including the National Electric Code and local codes; skill in interpreting schematic drawings, charts, and technical instructions; and good oral and written communication skills
  • Job typically requires trade or vocational school education to nearly the journeyman electrician level and to obtain equivalent on the job training skills over a period of 5 years.
  • Must be able to work with minimum supervision by prioritizing and coordinating multiple assignments, initiating action, taking responsibility for completion of assignments, and communicating progress to customers and management. Must be self-motivated.
  • May be required to obtain certain government security clearances, receive inoculations against certain diseases, conduct work in biohazard areas, and conduct work in radiation hazard areas. Respirator certification and use may be required.
  • May be required to work after normal business hours including weekends for the performance of activities related to power shutdowns, maintenance, repairs, installations, etc. as determined by the need to minimize business disturbances and respond to emergency situations. Overtime may be necessary.
  • Requires the physical ability to perform medium difficulty work, including lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling electrical materials and tools; ability to climb ladders, maintain balance, stoop, kneel and crouch to gain access to electrical wiring; ability to handle and read meters and tool accessories; acuity of vision for close work; depth perception, field of vision, and color vision for making electrical connections and for soldering and splicing wires. Work may be conducted inside or outside.
