Job Summary: 

The Consumer Underwriter I is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and processing consumer loan applications while providing timely, accurate support to branches, dealerships, and internal team members. Also responsible for the processing of all consumer mortgage products. Work Saturday shifts as assigned. At the entry level, this role begins with zero lending authority and focuses on administrative and analytical tasks, including becoming proficient in processing assigned consumer mortgage products, and preparing consumer loan files for decisioning by authorized underwriters.

As proficiency is demonstrated and required training is successfully completed, the Consumer Underwriter I may be granted limited lending authority to decision consumer loan requests (excluding mortgages) within defined approval limits. After earning lending authority, the role expands to include independent decisioning of eligible consumer loans, continued support to branches and dealerships, and increasing responsibility in underwriting functions.

The position serves as the foundational stage in the Consumer Underwriter career path, with the expectation of progressive development toward Consumer Underwriter III, which holds full lending authority for all consumer loan and mortgage products.

Job Qualifications: 

Required:

  • ·    High school diploma or equivalent.
  • ·   Minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience in financial services, such as consumer loan processing, mortgage processing, underwriting, or comparable professional experience and training.
  • ·    Operational knowledge of the financial services industry, loan documentation, and credit analysis.
  • ·    Experience using a core processing system and lending platforms.
  • ·     Ability to review and interpret consumer credit reports, income documentation, and collateral valuations.
  • ·     Solid multitasking ability with the capacity to work independently, manage deadlines, and demonstrate initiative, drive, and perseverance.
  • ·     Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • ·     Must possess or be eligible to obtain an NMLS license within a designated timeframe.
  • ·     Must have reliable transportation to and from work

Preferred:

  • College coursework or a degree in business, finance, or a related field.
  • Experience in indirect lending or dealer relationships.
  • Familiarity with federal lending regulations (ECOA, HMDA, TILA, RESPA, Fair Lending, HOEPA) with willingness and ability to learn.
  • Experience reviewing and analyzing consumer credit reports, income documentation, and collateral valuations.
