This position provides legal advice to H&R Block, Inc. and its subsidiaries on a variety of complex legal issues, including business operations and complex transactions in support of strategic imperatives.     
 
Day to day, you'll...  

  • Research, analyze and provide legal advice to business units on complex legal and compliance matters related to Company’s operations, product and strategic initiatives, particularly in the area of small business services, with a focus on DIY software solutions offered in both the US and Canada.
  • Provide legal counsel and guidance regarding complex transactions involving sophisticated counterparties and external service providers, including professional services agreements, licenses, and other strategic sourcing agreements.
  • Assist with legal review and risk mitigation tactics regarding all aspects of client interactions, including consumer disclosures and agreements, identity verification and authentication, e-signatures, marketing, privacy and data use, and customer service.
  • Work closely with the VP-Legal Financial Services/Franchise/Small Business, General Counsel, and key business partners to provide high level legal support on a variety of initiatives.
  • Monitor evolving laws that may impact the business and help design and implement compliant solutions.
  • Serve as a department subject matter expert on matters related to small business services, including, bookkeeping, payroll, payments, financial technology, advisory services, and commercial finance solutions.
  • Contribute to team efforts by timely meeting commitments and working collaboratively with minimal supervision. 
  • Periodically assist with diverse high demand legal projects outside normal area of focus.
  • Manage outside counsel within budget. 
  • Some domestic or international travel may be required.

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate degree plus license to practice law in one or more states. A current member of the Missouri Bar or an ability to become a member of the Missouri Bar within six months. 
  • At least five years of legal experience at a large law firm, corporate legal department, or similar. 
  • Detail-oriented focus, with demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills.
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with an ability to communicate and persuade a wide range of audiences. 
  • Proven ability to build strong, collaborative relationships with clients and external partners, delivering thoughtful, customer-focused legal guidance that supports business objectives.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate multiple projects and work initiatives at the same time.
  • A positive attitude, a collegial approach, and an instinct to go “above and beyond” in order to achieve the optimal outcome for the Company. 

 

 


Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant experience providing legal advice on complex matters related to small business services and solutions.
  • Some experience providing legal advice on complex matters related to financial services in banking and/or fintech, including BSA/AML advice.
  • Significant experience working on complex corporate transactions involving sophisticated counterparties and external service providers.
  • Experience with AI powered tools and practices incorporated into daily work.
  • Significant experience working with and providing legal advice to senior executives.

Pay Range Information

The pay range for this position is listed below. Local minimum wage laws apply. This information is posted pursuant to local requirements to provide applicants with information about what they might be eligible to receive. Individual pay decisions will depend on job-related factors such as experience, education, skill, performance, and geographic location where work will be performed. Successful candidates may be able to participate in one or more incentive compensation or short-term incentive plans, which could generate additional earnings in accordance with the terms of each plan.


Qualifying associates can enroll themselves and/or their eligible dependents in medical and prescription drug coverage; can participate in the H&R Block Retirement Savings Plan (401(k) Plan), the Employee Assistance Program, (virtual) fitness center programs, and the associate discount program; are automatically enrolled in Business Travel Accident Insurance; and receive Associate Tax Prep benefit.
Pay Range

$120,900.00 - $205,500.00/Yr.
