UTHealth Houston's Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences' Trauma and Resilience Center is hiring a Counselor! The UTHealth Houston Trauma and Resilience Center (TRC) is a multidisciplinary treatment, research, and education center offering exclusively evidence-based, trauma-focused care for patients struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related behavioral health conditions such as depression, insomnia, and substance abuse related to the traumatic event.

Position Summary:

The Counselor II provides professional assessment, counseling support, and referral services to clients by independently utilizing and evaluating community treatment resources. Coordinates and monitors client care, manages more complex cases, and supports continuity of services.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Obtains client historical medical data and interprets data obtained to determine possible problem area.
  • Provides professional counseling support to assist clients in understanding their situation and available options.
  • Independently assesses patient needs, identifies primary concerns, and determines appropriate referral recommendations.
  • Provides short-term problem resolution to clients.
  • Makes proper referral recommendations and motivates clients to seek assistance with appropriate community agency.
  • Interviews and evaluates service of agencies and may participate in training programs and seminars for client companies.
  • Documents and updates client records and keeps client companies appraised of client problems.
  • Monitors results of treatment and reviews cases for further evaluation to assure continuity of client care and education of client.
  • Provides day-to-day guidance and functional oversight to Counselor I staff or interns, as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of counseling principles and referral practices
  • Ability to independently assess client needs and recommend appropriate interventions
  • Knowledge of community treatment resources and service networks
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage complex cases with minimal supervision
  • Ability to provide guidance to entry-level staff or interns

     

  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) by Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors required

Minimum Education:

Master's Degree in Counseling, Psychology, Behavioral Sciences or a closely related field required

Minimum Experience:

2 years of related experience required

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Security Sensitive:

This position is a security-sensitive position pursuant to Texas Education Code §51.215 and Texas Government Code §411.094. To the extent that a position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Texas Business and Commerce Code §117.001(2), the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired for and to continue to be employed in that position. Personnel in such positions, and similarly situated state contractors, will be routinely reviewed to determine whether things such as criminal history or continuous connections to the government or political apparatus of a foreign adversary might prevent the applicant, employee, or contractor from being able to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure. A foreign adversary is a nation listed in 15 C.F.R. §791.4.

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
