POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) this position is responsible for coordinating, monitoring, and maintaining all aspects of provider credentialing, recredentialing, privileging, and enrollment activities for the Laguna Healthcare Corporation. This position ensures compliance with federal, state, tribal, payer, and accreditation requirements to support timely reimbursement and quality patient care. The Credentialing Specialist serves as the primary liaison between healthcare providers, insurance payers, regulatory agencies, and clinic leadership regarding credentialing and enrollment matters. Independent judgment is required to plan, prioritize and organize diversified workload. The Credentialing Specialist is expected to maintain confidentiality, demonstrate cultural sensitivity and contribute to the health center’s mission of providing quality, culturally appropriate healthcare.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Coordinate initial and ongoing credentialing, recredentialing, and privileging processes for all licensed healthcare providers.
- Verify provider qualifications, education, training, licensure, certifications, work history, malpractice coverage, and professional references.
- Maintain accurate provider credential files and electronic databases.
- Monitor expiration dates for licenses, certifications, DEA registrations, CPR certifications, malpractice insurance, and other required credentials.
- Prepare credentialing and privileging packets for review by clinic leadership and credentialing committees.
- Track and ensure timely completion of credentialing and recredentialing requirements.
- Complete and submit provider enrollment applications with Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance plans, and other third-party payers.
- Coordinate enrollment, updates, and terminations with payer organizations.
- Monitor application status and resolve enrollment issues to prevent disruptions in provider billing and reimbursement.
- Maintain provider records within payer portals and enrollment systems
- Ensure compliance with Indian Health Service (IHS), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Tribal 638 program requirements, and applicable accreditation standards.
- Conduct regular audits of credentialing files and provider records for completeness and accuracy.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive provider information in accordance with HIPAA and applicable regulations.
- Assist with preparation for audits, surveys, and accreditation reviews.
- Generate reports related to credentialing, provider enrollment, and compliance activities.
- Serve as a resource to providers and clinic staff regarding credentialing requirements and processes.
- Develop and maintain credentialing policies, procedures, and tracking systems.
- Participate in departmental meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and special projects as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Two (2) years of experience in healthcare credentialing, provider enrollment, medical staff services or healthcare administration. Experience working in a Tribal, Indian Health Service (IHS), Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), Rural Health Clinic, or healthcare setting preferred. Experience working with Native American communities and a strong understanding of tribal sovereignty and tribal government preferred.
Education: Associate Degree in business administration, healthcare administration, health information management or related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
License/Certification: Must possess or obtain Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist (CPCS) or Certified Professional Medical Services Management (CPMSM) certification within one (1) year of employment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative to those an employee encounters while performing the primary functions of this job. Normal office conditions exist, and the noise level in the work environment can vary from low to moderate. Limited overnight travel may be required from time to time and occasional travel for offsite meetings. May require flexible hours to accommodate clinical leadership schedules. This position may be exposed to certain health risks that are inherent when working within a health center facility, such as potential exposure to hazardous chemicals, sharps and infectious body fluids. Physical demands: The physical demands are representative of the physical requirements necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to frequently stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, talk, hear and perform repetitive motions. There may be prolonged periods of sitting, keyboarding, reading, as well as driving or riding in transport vehicles. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include reading, distance, computer, and color vision. Talking and hearing are essential to communicate with patients, vendors and staff.
