Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Dental Assistant within Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery-Pre-doctoral Program at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (RSDM).

The Dental Assistant will assist dentists, residents, and student dentists with dental procedures and patient treatment. The Dental Assistant provides assistance during implant dentistry procedures. and is responsible for the dispensing of equipment, instruments, and materials used in the clinic and for maintaining an adequate inventory to meet the needs of the dental students and residents. Additionally, the Dental Assistant carries out a variety of general office receptionist assignments, including front desk and data entry.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Identifies and pull selected equipment, instruments and supplies needed for dental procedures. Prepares and set up work area and operatory for the scheduled procedure including turnovers, cleaning, restocking, inventory and ordering of supplies and instruments on a regular basis. Assist in gowning and gloving of residents.
  • Escorts patients from waiting area to operatory and prepare patient for procedure, such as draping, positioning, witnessing patient consent and organizing instrumentation prior to procedure.
  • Checks and records vital signs prior to procedure.
  • Prepares and assists with implant and dental procedures.
  • Assists residents and dental students with dental procedures.
  • Takes X-Rays, including PAN at the request of the attending and/or residents.
  • As assigned, provides receptionist/front desk coverage; provides other related clerical tasks as assigned or needed.
  • Ensures the dispensary area meets all OSHA regulations.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited Dental Assisting program.

Certifications/Licenses

  • Certification as a Dental Assistant (CDA) through the Dental Assisting National Board.
  • Possess a valid Dental Radiographic Technology License issued by the State of New Jersey, Department of Environmental Protection.
  • Current BLS certification required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be computer literate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years as a CDA is preferred.
  • Experience with additional software products utilized by the department is preferred.


Physical Demands and Work Environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Position requires standing 2/3 of the time; walking 2/3 of the time; requires sitting 1/3 of the time; use of hands/fingers 2/3 of the time; reach with hands and arms 1/3 of the time; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl 1/3 of the time; talk or listen when appropriate 100% of the time.
  • Must be able to help lift patients, heavy boxes weighing up to forty (40) pounds, instruments set weighing up to twenty (20) pounds; must be able to lift dental supplies above the head.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Clinic and Office operations, moderate noise.
