Job Description

Developer, Digital Platforms

Organization Description:

Since 1981, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy (Parks Conservancy) has served as the nonprofit partner of the National Park Service, collaborating with the Presidio Trust, partners, donors, and the community to support the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). The GGNRA stretches across three Bay Area counties north and south of the Golden Gate Bridge and includes iconic places such as Muir Woods National Monument, Fort Point National Historic Site, Alcatraz Island, Crissy Field, Mori Point, Lands End, and the Presidio of San Francisco.

The Parks Conservancy engages at the intersection of national park sites, local communities, social justice, and climate resilience. Collaborating with partners, our staff are dedicated to enhancing public awareness and providing volunteer and educational opportunities in the parks. We are park builders, caretakers, ambassadors and educators, all working to connect people to parks in support of our vision Parks for All Forever. Join us.

Department Description:

The Technology and Data Team is part of the Parks Conservancy’s centralized Operations Branch, which supports approximately 300 employees working across a wide range of sites and functions—including offices, field operations, visitor services, education, membership, and retail—throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. The IT function is responsible for the secure, stable, and strategic deployment of systems and platforms that enable the organization’s mission and day-to-day operations.

Position Overview:

As a key contributor within the Technology and Data team, the Developer, Digital Platforms, supports the development, maintenance, integration, and evolution of the Parks Conservancy’s digital platforms. These include public-facing websites, enterprise applications, and other systems that span multiple departments and business functions.

The Developer will be a technical lead and architect, helping plan and implement digital tools and system integrations that support business application growth, improve data interoperability, and enable better organization-wide reporting.

The Developer, Digital Platforms, is responsible for building innovative digital solutions and maintaining the organization’s web-based platforms. This role collaborates closely with staff to develop, enhance, and integrate features across multiple websites, content management systems, and digital tools. The ideal candidate possesses hands-on technical expertise and leadership skills to drive projects from conception to deployment.

This position is part of the IT organization and will be called upon to provide general IT services beyond core responsibilities to ensure high customer service. As a hybrid role, the position requires a regular on-site presence at the Parks Conservancy’s Fort Mason headquarters, with a minimum of three days per week in the office. This in-person component is essential to support hands-on collaboration with staff, troubleshoot technical issues, and engage directly with park operations and infrastructure. The remaining workdays may be performed remotely, allowing for flexibility while maintaining high levels of support and responsiveness across the organization.

This role reports to the Director of Technology Strategy and Data Insights and is vital in advancing digital transformation and system modernization initiatives across the Parks Conservancy.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

• Serve as the technical lead for the organization’s web-based platforms, ensuring optimal functionality, security, and scalability.
• Oversee and manage the existing code base, develop new features, and propose enhancements.
• Act as a hands-on application architect, designing and implementing solutions that align with organizational needs and best practices.
• Lead the integration of key systems, including CRM, donor management, and analytics platforms, ensuring seamless data flow and interoperability.
• Manage vendor relationships, overseeing external development and support contracts, and ensuring high-quality technical deliverables.
• Develop and maintain integrations between the organization's web properties and third-party platforms via APIs and data feeds.
• Oversee web analytics, create custom reports, and train staff on data insights to support strategic decision-making.
• Create and maintain responsive web experiences that scale across multiple devices, including custom microsites and email templates. This refers strictly to the technical implementation of digital components (e.g., coding, platform configuration, cross-device compatibility), not design, content development, messaging, or campaign design, which remain the responsibility of Communications, Development, and Retail teams.
• Implement best practices for web security and ensure compliance with industry standards.
• Train staff on content management, CRM, and project management tools as needed.
• Perform duties as assigned to support the IT organization and overall operations.

• Proven experience in developing and implementing technology strategies aligned with organizational goals.

• Experience with Drupal 7, 8, and 10, including customization and security best practices.
• Hands-on application architecture experience, including designing scalable and maintainable digital solutions.
• Strong project management skills, with experience leading complex technical projects from planning to execution.
• Vendor management experience, including coordinating external developers and reviewing technical deliverables.
• Knowledge of both Linux and Microsoft domain environments.
• Experience with Blackbaud CRM and related donor management tools.
• Familiarity with web analytics platforms, including Google Analytics, and the ability to create meaningful reports.
• Strong project management and problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and addressing challenges.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in nonprofit or mission-driven organizations.
• Familiarity with integrating applications like Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge, and Drupal, along with data cleansing methods that improve quality, reduce duplication and support operational and reporting needs.
• Background in digital marketing and online fundraising tools.
• Experience with cloud hosting and server administration.

Education and/or Experience:

• A bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related discipline is required.

Health and Safety:

Employees play an active role in creating a safe and healthy workplace and are expected to comply with all applicable health and safety rules.

Physical Requirements and Work Environments:

• This position is located at the Parks Conservancy’s headquarters in Fort Mason, San Francisco. Work is performed in an office setting, including a mix of telework and on-site. This hybrid position requires at least three days per week on-site to support hands-on IT collaboration and operations.
