Job Description

Position Summary:

The Cook is responsible for preparing, cooking, and serving meals to residents in accordance with prescribed dietary requirements and sanitation regulations. This position plays a critical role in maintaining resident health, satisfaction, and overall well-being through nutritious, safe, and delicious food.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and cook meals according to planned menus and resident diets (regular, mechanical soft, pureed, therapeutic diets, etc.).

  • Follow standardized recipes and portion controls.

  • Ensure meals are served at proper temperatures and within scheduled meal times.

  • Maintain food safety and sanitation standards in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations (including HACCP guidelines).

  • Assist in the setup and breakdown of the kitchen, including cleaning and sanitizing food preparation areas, utensils, and equipment.

  • Label, date, and store food properly to prevent spoilage or cross-contamination.

  • Monitor and record food temperatures, refrigerator/freezer temps, and other required logs.

  • Work collaboratively with dietary aides and other team members to ensure smooth kitchen operations.

  • Communicate any supply shortages, equipment issues, or resident food concerns to the Dietary Manager.

  • Assist with special meals/events as required (holidays, birthdays, etc.).

  • Follow safety protocols and report any hazards or accidents promptly.


Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.

  • Minimum 1 year of cooking experience in a healthcare, long-term care, or institutional setting preferred.

  • Knowledge of therapeutic diets and texture modifications preferred.

  • Must be able to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions in English.

  • ServSafe Certification or equivalent food handler training preferred (or ability to obtain upon hire).

  • Strong time management and organizational skills.


Schedule:

  • Rotating schedule with two primary shifts:

    • Morning Shift: 5:00 AM – 1:30 PM

    • Evening Shift: 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM

  • Must be available to work weekends and holidays as scheduled.


Physical Requirements:

  • Able to stand, bend, reach, and walk for extended periods.

  • Lift up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.

  • Tolerate hot and cold temperature environments in kitchen areas.
