Job Description

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Directs the design of employee benefit plans and delivery of benefits programs and services, including health insurance, retirement plans, disability programs, and workers’ compensation. Ensures benefits programs and services are provided fairly and equitably in alignment university strategic objectives, needs, and realities
  • Leads the development and execution of the university’s benefits strategy. Evaluates benefits needs and provides recommendations to senior leadership on program improvements or changes
  • Manages benefits related systems and tools. Responsible for the accurate documentation, management, and maintenance of benefits and employment records and data. Ensures benefits data and analytic reports in compliance with state and federal rules and regulations
  • Reviews benefits operations and policies, recommending adjustments ore new approaches to maintain market competitiveness, optimize employee satisfaction, attraction, and retention, and ensure compliance with applicable laws
  • Oversees employee benefits communications, outreach, and education efforts including website content, presentations, meetings, and guest speakers
  • Acts as a subject-matter expert in employee benefits offerings and policies. Counsels employees and university leaders on complex benefits problems and questions. Advises on legislative actions and communicates impact on the university
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Knowledge of benefits administration practices, programs, and regulations
  • Skill in analytical data analysis with the ability to interpret complex data and provide actionable insights
  • Skill establishing trust, fostering collaboration, and maintaining productive partnerships with a diverse range of individuals at all levels
  • Ability to manage multiple, complex projects and deliver quality recommendations
  • Ability to establish, define, and communicate department goals and objectives that support the strategic plan and planning, implementing, and evaluating programs

Minimum Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • 10 years relevant experience
  • Equivalent combination of experience & education may be considered

Job Level Overview

Management and People Leadership Level 4 -Directs a large department, significant parts of a college or division, or multiple disciplines that have critical impact at the university-level. Primarily provides leadership through other managers. Sets strategic direction, shapes business strategies, develops operational plans, and ensures alignment with overall university objectives.

The Director will be a proven leader with deep expertise in developing and administering progressive human resources and employee benefits policies and programs. Success in this role requires a collaborative mindset, strong stakeholder engagement skills, and the ability to influence through subject matter expertise and thoughtful guidance. Deep understanding of, and experience with, contemporary benefits and wellness strategies and programs as well as the ability to interpret complex information, distill key insights, and communicate them clearly to stakeholders across functions to support informed decision-making are essential for this role. The Director must demonstrate sound judgment, political acumen, and a commitment to fostering a culture of trust, innovation, and continuous improvement.
