Job Description
Position Title: Director of Marketing & Communications
Reporting Department: Communications
Reporting Supervisor: President 
Location: Main Building
FLSA Status: Exempt, Full-Time
Organizational Function: Leadership Team
 
PURPOSE: 
Implement successful communications strategies to increase awareness of Minnetrista, grow attendance, and increase institutional revenue across programming, exhibits, retail and events. Develop innovative marketing campaigns and forward-thinking approaches with the community and visitors. Advocate for the organization and build relationships with the media and the public. Key participant in strategic and operational discussions and decision-making as a member of the Leadership.
 
This position is expected to offer a salary in the range of approximately $60,000 annually, with final compensation determined based on experience, qualifications, and overall fit for the role.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Have a bachelor’s degree in marketing, journalism, public relations or related field with 5+ years’ experience in a communications/marketing team capacity. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead a team and manage complex projects; direct experience managing a marketing or communications team is preferred. 
  • Exhibit a strong understanding of current trends in nonprofit and arts communications.
  • Possess strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to adapt writing to a variety of formats and channels; creativity, collaboration, and flexibility are required.
  • Be organized, detail oriented, dependable, able to prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks on time and on budget within a cross-functional and cross-institutional team environment. 
  • Have a diverse knowledge base in communications, including graphic design processes, printed and digital media, advertising, and copywriting and editing.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

JOB DUTIES
  • Lead institutional communications plan development and implementation.
  • Create individual communication strategies for a diverse set of offerings to achieve identified goals and reach diverse and targeted audiences.
  • Develop new messaging and communications leads.
  • Evaluate marketing initiatives and other communications department activities for effectiveness, use the findings to create a responsive, strategic communications mix.
  • Serve as the organization’s main contact for all media to proactively and positively bring public awareness of the organization’s mission, programs, and events.
  • Develop media relationships and maintain up-to-date media contacts.
  • Maintain data on current and potential markets to develop marketing strategies and plans.
  • Manage communications department budgets, including development and oversight of expenses.
  • Manage all institutional communications projects including scheduling, oversight of design, approval by stakeholders, and timeliness of delivery.
  • Write clean and compelling copy for ads, press releases, and institutional communications (internal and external) independently and in collaboration with content experts from across campus; provide copy editing expertise for institutional communications. 
  • Manage the digital advertising program, including oversight of advertising schedules and building/ maintaining relationships with account contacts. 
  • Supervise and support communications department staff.
  • Manage and participate in outreach activities that promote Minnetrista’s events, exhibits, and programs, both on-site and around the community.
  • Engage in professional development and maintain an understanding of nonprofit communications trends in order to make strategic decisions related to institutional marketing and communications.
  • Participate in Minnetrista’s success by improving processes, sharing information and contributing new ideas.
  • Maintain and implement the Minnetrista Brand Usage Guide with the Graphic Designer; champion its use among all staff.
  • Perform all other duties as required.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Primarily a sedentary office environment with desk, computer, phone, and physical files; an option to work some portion remote may be appropriate as facilitated through the President. Must be able to reach overhead and handle items approximately 20 lbs. Must be able to move about the entire Minnetrista 40-acre campus. Occasional evening and weekend work and on-call availability required.
