Job Title: Environmental Health Specialist I
Department: Environmental Health and Sustainability
Classification: Non-Exempt
 
Position Summary: Join a small, collaborative, and passionate Environmental Health and Sustainability (EHS) team dedicated to protecting public health and advancing sustainability initiatives in alignment with the organization’s values and mission statement. This position offers opportunities for cross-training and collaboration on environmental health, climate action, waste reduction, transportation, and other sustainability programs.
Primary responsibilities include conducting restaurant and childcare inspections, reviewing plans for new food establishments, providing food safety education and outreach, overseeing special events, and supporting air quality monitoring, compliance, sampling, and reporting activities. 
This position requires regular interaction with community members, businesses, partner organizations, and other City departments.  The EHS team values continuous learning and supports ongoing professional development and training opportunities.

Supervision Exercised and Received: This position works under the direct supervision of the Environmental Health Program Administrator.

Essential Job Functions:  
Project Management 
•    Consumer Protection & Food Safety Program 
•    Inspects restaurants and childcare facilities. 
•    Conducts permit reviews for new or remodeled food establishments. 
•    Provides food safety education, trainings, and technical assistance. 
•    Responds to and investigates complaints (e.g., foodborne illness). 
•    Reviews and approves temporary food vendor applications and conducts food safety inspections at special events. 

Air Quality & Other Environmental Health Programs 
•    Operates, maintains, and performs quality assurance checks of air monitors. 
•    Helps with air quality programs, including radon, indoor air quality, and incentives. 
•    Responds to air quality inquiries and complaints. 
•    Provides department support, conducts community outreach, and helps at events. 
•    Participates in professional development opportunities and attends meetings and trainings. 

Special Projects and Administrative Support 
•    Supports city-wide special projects, organizational goals and initiatives, and participates in cross-functional teams. 

Customer Service 
•    Responds to and helps resolve citizen complaints related to restaurants, childcare facilities, food borne illnesses, and air quality concerns. May occasionally be required to respond to citizen concerns around noise, dust, trash, and other issues. Investigates issues and enforces city codes related to the environment and protection of health. 
•    Communicates, in writing and in person, food safety and sanitation requirements to regulated entities, including restaurants, grocery stores, childcare facilities, and special events.

Department Support 
•    Provides support to all functional areas in Environmental Health and Sustainability and may provide technical expertise, training of related programs, and consultation to employees. This position is expected to develop a working knowledge in multiple program areas.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, public health, or related field. 

Experience: At least one year of relevant work experience in environmental health or any field that provided experience in the Essential Job Functions listed above.  

Technical Knowledge: Must be proficient in the following areas: Microsoft Outlook Email, and a basic understanding of computers and online computer-based technology applications, which includes accessing web-based platforms. Must be able to achieve standardization for retail food establishments within two years of hire. 

Licenses & Certifications: Must establish and maintain Colorado residency within 90 days of hire in accordance with applicable state requirements. When a driver’s license or commercial driver’s license is required for the position, must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date.

Preferred Candidate: Bilingual in English and Spanish. Standardized in retail food inspections in Colorado. Colorado Driver’s License preferred, or ability to obtain upon hire.   

NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above. 

NOTE: This position requires a Criminal Background Check upon hire.  Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check. 
 

Position Type and Work Hours:  
•    Regular full-time, hours may vary with workload 
•    Evenings/Weekends will occasionally be required 
•    Approximately 75% of work time will be dedicated to food safety and restaurant inspections, with the remaining 25% focused on air quality and other environmental health projects; actual assignments may vary based on departmental needs. 
•    Flexible work arrangements, including alternative schedules and occasional remote work, may be available based on operational needs and in accordance with applicable City policies.

Work Environment:  
•    Indoors: Office environment.
•    Outdoors/Off-Site: Project work sites include construction sites, restaurants, and special events. Air quality sample collection and other work will be performed outdoors and in potentially harsh climates. Occasionally subject to noisy environments. Meetings, trainings, and site visits at a variety of city facilities and areas.
