Description

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION

1.                  Main job function is to operate side loader type refuse truck.  In time of need may be required to operate smaller flatbed trucks and/or front end loader.

2.         Cleans, performs minor repairs as well as preventive maintenance on equipment.  Makes necessary work orders or reports.

3.         Secures tools and equipment for job assignments.  Washes and cleans vehicles weekly or more often as necessary.

4.                  Will supervise training of new drivers.

5.                  May operate various power tools and perform semi-skilled labor in connection with various maintenance and construction activities in other departmental operations.

6.                  May assist in welding and other construction trade functions.

7.                  Must have considerable knowledge of equipment operating principles; working knowledge of the methods used in refuse collection and transportation

8.                  Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.

9.                  The employee must be able to operate equipment and drive vehicles in all weather, traffic and surface conditions.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED 

Must be able to read and comprehend documents and directions if needed. At least 1-2 years of related work experience in the solid waste industry and/or truck driving.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONS, LICENSES REQUIRED

Must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Must have a class "B" CDL.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Light to moderate lifting on a daily basis.  Must be able to lift, walk, and

carry over 50 pounds on an infrequent basis.

Must be able to stoop, kneel, crawl, and bend over to lift and do job.

Must be able to climb into and onto truck.

Must be able to operate heavy duty commercial vehicles safely and efficiently

Must have vision and eye-hand coordination to operate safely and proficiently; hearing to observe engine sounds.

Must be able to provide quality customer service and be able to work

Effectively with a crew, follow oral and written instructions sometimes in a lead capacity.

Must be able to work in inclement weather.

Must be able to communicate with the supervisor involving work related jobs and with citizens about services provided.

Must have the ability to understand oral or written instructions and to give oral instruction; ability to observe safety precautions; ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public; ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying conditions; ability to assess the job at hand and make necessary changes or corrections keeping in line with standard procedures.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND SAFETY CONCERNS

Some physical inconvenience and discomfort routinely present in the work situation.  Job requires the incumbent to be aware of and observe safe working procedures.  Hazards encountered include but are not limited to noxious odors, glass and sharp objects, diseases, hepatitis, hazardous materials, wires, trees and obstacles.

Summary

NATURE OF WORK

Skilled work in the operation of special heavy-duty diesel refuse truck.  Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of, but not limited to, 25 to 33 cubic yard side loader trucks weighing over 26,000 pounds.  Work involves light maintenance and servicing of the assigned equipment, this involves but is not limited to, routine maintenance such as greasing, checking and adding fluids, changing hydraulic hoses, bushing and roller replacement, and weekly washing and cleaning of the truck.  Operation of the assigned truck is the predominate task in the work performed.  Additional duties may include removing objects from trash containers, cleaning around containers, moving objects that may cause damage to private property or city equipment, replacing hinge straps, hook bolts and lids on containers.  Operators are assigned a specific daily route; it is expected that the assigned route be completed in a timely and efficient manner each day.   Operator may provide supervision over one or more maintenance workers.  Work is reviewed both in progress and upon completion for the execution of the job, care of the equipment, and safety of operation.
