Job Summary

The Field Decommission Technician supports the safe and efficient decommissioning of power distribution equipment at customer sites and Emerald Transformer facilities. The position is responsible for dismantling retired units, recovering salvageable metals and usable parts, and handling oils, solvents, and other liquid compounds in accordance with company safety and environmental expectations. This role requires regular travel throughout Emerald Transformer’s service territory, including overnight and extended stays, and the flexibility to work overtime, call-in hours, evenings, and weekends to meet customer needs. When field work is not scheduled, the technician is assigned work at the home facility and may also support other field crews or Emerald Transformer entities as needed.

Key Responsibilities 
  • Decommission power distribution equipment in commercial and industrial environments. 
  • Disassemble decommissioned power distribution units safely and efficiently.
  • Salvage metals and recover usable parts from decommissioned equipment.
  • Handle, contain, and dispose of oils, solvents, and other liquid compounds in accordance with company environmental and safety requirements.
  • Use hand tools, pneumatic tools, and cutting torches to complete assigned work.
  • Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, and other material handling equipment as needed.
  • Maintain accountability for shop tools and equipment at the assigned worksite.
  • Travel throughout Emerald Transformer’s service territory, including overnight and extended stays near customer locations. 
  • Work overtime and respond to call-in needs, including evening and weekend emergency work, to support customer requirements. 
  • Collaborate closely with coworkers and contribute effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Perform assigned work at the home facility when field decommission work is not scheduled, based on direction from facility leadership. 
  • Support other field crews and, when needed, perform assignments for any Emerald Transformer entity. 
  • Maintain a safe, orderly, and productive worksite at all times.
  • Package and bale materials for shipment and load trailers as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education/Certifications
  • A high school diploma or GED is preferred. 
  • A valid driver’s license is preferred. 
Experience
  • One to three years of experience in industrial labor, field service, demolition, mechanical disassembly, rigging, scrap/salvage operations, transformer or electrical equipment support, or a related hands-on environment preferred. 
  • Experience using hand tools and pneumatic tools in a production, shop, or field environment required. 
  • Experience working around heavy equipment, metal components, or material handling operations preferred.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to safely decommission and disassemble power distribution equipment.
  • Ability to identify and recover salvageable metals and usable components. 
  • Ability to safely handle oils, solvents, and other liquid compounds.
  • Ability to use hand tools and pneumatic tools effectively.
  • Ability to operate a cutting torch to cut metal parts.
  • Ability to operate forklifts, overhead cranes, and other material handling equipment as needed.
  • Ability to work independently, stay self-directed, and complete tasks in a timely and efficient manner with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work closely with others in a team-oriented environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout Emerald Transformer’s service territory, including overnight and extended stays.
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime, call-in hours, and evening or weekend emergency assignments as needed. 
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work, including exerting up to 100 pounds occasionally and more than 50 pounds frequently.
  • Ability to climb, push, stand, hear, walk, reach, feel, balance, pull, stoop, lift, finger, crawl, crouch, kneel, grasp, and perform repetitive motion as required by the job.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors and tolerate extreme cold, extreme heat, vibration, atmospheric conditions, exposure to oils, and other hazardous conditions including moving mechanical parts, vehicles, electrical current, scaffolding, heights, heat, and chemicals. 
  • Ability to work in narrow aisles or passageways and to consistently use required personal protective equipment, including eye protection, gloves, and hearing protection.
