About the Department

Finance Technician I - Sales Tax

The Finance Technician I is an entry-level role supporting the City’s Sales Tax Division through clerical and data entry functions, including tax return processing, taxpayer registration, and account maintenance. The position serves as a primary point of contact for the public and internal staff, assisting via phone, email, and in person. Success in this role requires clear communication, a consistently professional and composed demeanor, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines in a high-volume environment.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, on-site. No routine remote work; remote work required during City facility closures due to inclement weather or emergencies, unless otherwise directed.

*This position is subject to budget required furloughs to be implemented in the 2026 calendar year.*

As a Finance Technician I, you will:
  • Assist taxpayers and staff via phone, email, and in person
  • Provide account, licensing, payment, and refund information
  • Process sales tax licenses, certificates, and amended returns
  • Enter and reconcile tax data; resolve discrepancies
  • Prepare and balance daily deposits (cash, check, and credit)
  • Reconcile deposits with bank records and allocate funds
  • Maintain accurate financial records in compliance with established policies and procedures
  • Compile documentation and support the preparation of financial and accounting reports

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
  • Understanding of sales & use tax processes (preferred but not required)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data systems
  • Strong data entry and 10-Key accuracy
  • Clear written and verbal communication
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines
  • Team-oriented and adaptable

Position Duties

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of full-time experience in accounting, accounts receivable, tax processing, or a related field
