About the Position

Firefighter Paramedic Trainee is an entry-level, temporary, limited-term, at-will position for individuals enrolled in the final six (6) months of an approved paramedic training program. Under direct supervision, incumbent’s complete paramedic training, learn and provide Advanced Life Support (ALS) services, and develop firefighting, fire prevention, emergency medical response, and fire suppression skills through training and operational activities. Trainees support emergency operations while gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for a career in the fire service.


Continued employment is contingent upon maintaining enrollment and good standing in the required paramedic training program. Incumbents who fail to maintain enrollment for any reason will be separated from employment without cause and without the right of appeal. This classification is part of a career development pathway and may advance to the Firefighter classification upon successful completion of the paramedic program, meeting minimum qualification standards, availability of positions, and approval by the Fire Chief.

Position Duties

  • Attends an accredited paramedic training program to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to obtain paramedic licensure and provide Advanced Life Support (ALS) services.
  • Learn and assist in providing Advanced Life Support (ALS) emergency medical services, including patient assessment, emergency care, operation of medical equipment, patient transport, and effective communication with healthcare professionals to support quality patient care.
  • Participate in fire suppression training and activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 
  • Successful completion of state-certified fire academy.   A certificate verifying completion of a California State Fire Marshal Accredited Regional Fire Academy must be submitted with the application.
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited paramedic training program with no more than six (6) months remaining at the time of hire.
  • Applicants must provide verification from their paramedic training program, that they have completed didactics coursework and are entering the clinical and field experience stage of their paramedic training program.  This can be a letter on school letter head provided by their instructor
  • Proof of passing a CPAT within 12 months prior to appointment. 


License or Certificate
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license is required.
  • Possession of a valid EMT and CPR certification at time of appointment. 
  • Possession of Firefighter I certification issued by the California State Fire Marshal is desirable.

Supplemental Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age at the time of application.

Other Qualifications

Candidates must be enrolled in the final phase of an accredited paramedic training program, typically within the last six (6) months of the program following completion of required classroom instruction.


During this period, trainees generally participate in clinical and field internships, which may include approximately 120 hours of hospital-based clinical experience and 480 to 700 hours of supervised ambulance field training.


This classification is designed to support candidates as they complete these final program requirements and transition into full-time paramedic and firefighter responsibilities.

Employees in the job classes defined as Temporary, Part-Time are subject to the provisions of the City Personnel Rules and Regulations, and the terms of the Temporary / Part-Time Employee Compensation and Benefits Plan.

All Temporary, Part-Time employees are enrolled in the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS) in lieu of Social Security and accrue up to 40 hours of sick leave per year. Eligibility for other benefits is dependent upon the number of hours worked.
