POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Manage, organize, and maintain SRHS and NMFS databases; ensure proper functioning, data quality, and error corrections. Perform QA/QC checks on otolith and spine collections in Oracle; provide error reports to port agents. Compile dockside sampling data from head boat port agents in the South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. Maintain and develop QA/QC analyses and procedures. Track vessel reporting compliance; compile and maintain vessel directory. Perform and assist with data analyses using SAS and/or R in support of SEDAR activities and general scientific inquiries. Assist in completion of annual report summarizing head boat survey data. Write scientific proposals; review reports, manuscripts, and scientific proposals. Participate in public outreach and scientific meetings. Submit weekly status reports.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Required:
Manage and maintain SRHS/NMFS databases daily. Perform QA/QC on bio samples daily. Check and validate data daily; submit weekly status reports. Provide data to appropriate researchers at direction of Chief, Catch Validation and Biosampling Branch.
Desired:
Participate in special projects and multidisciplinary collaborations within and outside the agency. Write scientific proposals; review reports, manuscripts, and scientific proposals. Participate in public outreach events and scientific meetings.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Required:
MS Degree in Marine Science or related field; OR BS Degree + 3 years relevant experience. Knowledge of data management and analysis of fishery data. Proficient in advanced database software: SAS, R, Oracle, and Access.
Desired:
Experience managing and analyzing catch and effort information from recreational fishermen. Knowledge of statistical concepts and theory. Expertise in data management and analysis.
SKILLS:
Required:
SAS and/or R analytical software. Oracle and relational databases. Microsoft Excel, Access. Data QA/QC and compliance monitoring. Statistical analysis.
Desired:
