Job Description

Description

The Fleet Mechanic Lead advises Mechanic I and Mechanic II and performs inspections, diagnoses, repairs and services mechanical issues on City vehicles and equipment. The incumbent performs work in compliance with established safety procedures, meeting or exceeding industry and manufacturer estimated work times. The Fleet Mechanic Lead is responsible for the regular maintenance and upkeep of City Vehicles and Equipment related assets, assisting the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor in documentation and data collection and communication with the Director of Public Works in the Fleet Maintenance Supervisors absence.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Prepare and submit service logs and other documentation as necessary.
  • Repair vehicles and order parts needed for repairs
  • Lubricate vehicles and equipment, change oil and replace filters and air cleaners as needed. Drain and flush radiators and refill. Winterize vehicles with anti-freeze as needed.
  • Check oil and perform routine maintenance and services.
  • Replace plugs and plug wires as needed.
  • Change or repair flats and worn-out tires as needed.
  • Check and order fuel, oil and hydraulic filters.
  • Ensure work areas are clean and all shop equipment is in good working condition.
  • Complete other duties or tasks as directed or assigned.

 

  1. Organizes and conducts work order scheduling sessions with Departmental personnel to plan, prioritize and schedule routine and non-routine corrective, preventative and predictive maintenance activities in compliance with established Departmental policies and procedures to ensure the effective and efficient operations of the Fleet Maintenance Department; releases work orders after shop capacity levels are determined.
  2. Schedules and coordinates the preventative and repair maintenance activities of light, medium, heavy-weight and specialized vehicles and related equipment with the Fleet Maintenance Department and other City of Maumelle Departments and outside vendors based on demand, workload, parts, and materials availability to ensure the effective and efficient operations of the Fleet Maintenance Department.
  3. Coordinates with Fleet Maintenance Supervisor to monitor the Current and Future Fleet Management system to ensure work orders are completed in a timely manner; maintains equipment history to ensure accurate and up-to-date accountability of all equipment; reviews system reports; monitors and analyzes backlog and ensures all planned work is prioritized to address backlogged work orders.
  4. Coordinates with appropriate personnel to ensure an adequate amount of automotive parts are ordered and delivered to appropriate shop in advance of scheduled preventative maintenance and corrective work orders; develops consumption models to improve inventory accuracy; ensures appropriate reserves are maintained for planned and unplanned maintenance work; reviews work orders to ensure that inventory was updated and removed from Fleet Management system daily to ensure that adequate amount of inventory is on hand for upcoming maintenance and repair work; analyze inventory levels and product demands to determine reorder levels to ensure product availability and minimize inventory costs.
  5. Provides assistance to appropriate personnel in training departmental personnel in the utilization of the Current and Future management systems, Skills Development, and Job Safety Training.
  6. Determines tentative preventative maintenance schedules for City vehicles based on specific criteria; modifies preventative maintenance schedules as needed; distributes schedule to appropriate department liaisons.
  7. Determines preliminary diagnostic issues with vehicles and equipment based upon description of problems provided by driver/operators; reviews vehicle checklists prepared by departmental liaisons to identify additional repair maintenance required; enters applicable work orders into Current and Future management systems based on checklist information.
  8. Enter preliminary diagnostic work order information and notes into the Current and Future management systems based on inspection of unit and Technician findings; estimates repair completion times and parts required; monitors status of work orders and ensures deferred work orders are rescheduled as necessary.
  9. Coordinates and schedules the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment with appropriate personnel based on demand, workload, parts and material availability information received from Fleet Maintenance Department Supervisors; modifies work priorities and adjustments as necessary.
  10. Notifies Fleet Maintenance Department Supervisor of unusual or reoccurring vehicle problems, equipment problems, and causes of job delays.
  11. Answer questions and provide information regarding vehicle or equipment status, completion delays and other information to appropriate Department.
  12. Schedules and coordinates the delivery and return of vehicles with contract service vendors; communicates with vendors regarding status of vehicles.
  13. Enters and verifies applicable warranty information in the Current and Future management systems; processes warranty claims and vendor warranty reimbursement requests for applicable to City vehicles and equipment.
  14. Assigns and dispatches service vehicles and appropriate personnel to repair and service disabled units.
  15. Establishes and maintains hard copies, computer files, and records relative to maintenance and repair schedules, work orders, vehicle records and other related information.
  16. Inspect vehicles to verify that equipment has been removed from vehicles to ensure vehicle is prepared for disposal, updates vehicle status in Current and Future management systems.
  17. Compiles and reviews data to compare actual repair time relative to job time standards; reports discrepancies to Fleet Maintenance Department Supervisors.
  18. Accepts and signs delivery documents for parts, materials and assets for scheduled deliveries; ensure receipts are delivered to the Fleet Supervisor or the Public Works Office Administrator daily for any asset or material received throughout the day.
  19. Operates a forklift to transport stock supplies.
  20. Operates a computer utilizing database, spreadsheet, and word processing software in the performance of essential job functions.
  21. Operates City vehicles in the performance of essential job functions.

Summary

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and five (5) years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License is required for the duration of employment in the Fleet Maintenance Lead position.
  • Commercial Driver's License Class A is preferred.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT

  • Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.
  • Must possess certification as a forklift operator within one (1) year of employment and maintain certification for the duration of employment in this position.
  • Must be available to work nights, holidays, and weekends and respond to emergency calls as required. This may require overnights at the Public Works Facility during prolong emergency events.
