Position Summary:
Under direct supervision of the Labor Crew Supervisor performs various duties to restore native vegetation and manage the riparian and upland habitats on the Pueblo of Santa Ana. Collects GPS data and assists with controlled burns.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
· Plants, seeds and maintains native plants, clears non-native and invasive native vegetation from the Bosque and applies pesticides and herbicides as needed.
· Cuts down Oneseed Juniper trees, clears, and scatters slash and extracts salvageable fuel word as needed.
· Assists with the collection of data in the field including ground water, vegetation, and wildlife.
· Installs fencing as needed.
· Maintains log of daily activities.
· Accompanies outside contractors and federal agency representatives on Tribal lands.
· Assists with controlled burns to protect trees from future fire, disease, improve the habitat for many wildlife species, and manage competing vegetation.
· Operates tractors, mowers, water trucks, excavators, Bobcats and other heavy equipment as needed.
· Observes safety rules to ensure and maintain a safe work environment.
· Checks to ensure tools are in proper working order; reports defects and broken parts found on equipment.
· Assists with community outreach activities including Environmental Fair, Tribal clean-ups, wood distribution, and solid waste transfer station.
· Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.
· Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School diploma or GED and three years labor experience in managing vegetation and controlled burns. Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen, background investigation and fingerprinting; including a motor vehicle check. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver’s license and be insurable under the Pueblo’s insurance.
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications:
· Knowledge of proper safety techniques
· Knowledge of wildlife, habitat, and native and exotic vegetation.
· Skill in operating tools, equipment such as hand tools, power tools, chain saw, tractor, water truck, hand-mowers/auger, and 6-wheel ATV.
· Ability to exercise independent judgment.
· Ability to maintain confidentiality.
· Ability to work in the outdoors and inclement weather conditions.
· Ability to work independently and meet strict timelines.
· Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing
· Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with the individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds
· Ability to become certified in Sawyer Training, Wildland Firefighting, CPR and First Aid.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee regularly is required to climb or balance; and talk or hear. The employee occasionally is required to smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
Work Environment:
Work is generally performed outdoors. Exposure to natural weather conditions and various dusts may occur while performing outdoor duties. Standing and walking may be on uneven surfaces or unstable ground. Situations where safety-toe shoes, safety goggles, gloves, or protective face shields are needed may occur. Travel within the Pueblo area is required for completing work orders and working in sensitive and/or hazardous areas is common.
