Job Summary
We are seeking a
skilled and safety-conscious Forklift Operator to join our steel
operations team. The Forklift Operator is responsible for safe loading,
unloading, and moving steel products—such as beams, plate, coil, pipe, and
fabricated parts—within the yard, warehouse, or production area. This role
requires experience handling heavy and irregular loads, as well as strict
adherence to safety procedures.
Key
Responsibilities
- Operate forklifts (sit-down, stand-up,
or specialty forklifts) to handle and transport steel materials. - Load and unload steel products from
trucks, railcars, and storage racks. - Secure loads using chains, straps, or
other approved methods to prevent shifting or damage. - Inspect the forklift before each
shift, checking brakes, steering, lift mechanisms, and safety devices. - Read and interpret work orders,
shipping manifests, and inventory instructions. - Stage and organize materials in
designated areas for production or shipment. - Communicate with team members and
spotters to ensure safe movements in tight or high-traffic areas. - Maintain cleanliness and organization
in work areas to ensure safe forklift operation. - Report any damage to materials,
equipment, or facilities immediately to a supervisor. - Follow all OSHA regulations, company
safety policies, and PPE requirements.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Proven forklift operation experience,
preferably in the steel industry or other heavy industrial environments. - Current forklift certification (or
ability to obtain upon hire). - Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work
in hot, cold, and outdoor environments. - Strong attention to safety and
situational awareness. - Ability to read measurements,
understand steel product types, and follow layout or stacking
requirements.
Preferred
Qualifications
- Experience handling long, heavy, or
irregular steel loads. - Ability to operate additional
equipment such as overhead cranes or side-loaders. - Knowledge of yard management systems
or inventory tracking software.
Safety
Emphasis
Steel handling
requires extreme attention to safety. The Forklift Operator must continuously
operate at safe speeds, maintain awareness of the surroundings, and communicate
clearly with ground personnel to avoid accidents.
