    Purpose Statement
    The job of Instructional Assistant - Special Education is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program in Special Education and Pre-School, in assigned classroom(s) with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of special needs and pre-school students in the regular classroom or in a self-contained classroom; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during non-classroom time and in classroom; and providing information to appropriate school personnel.

    This job reports to Assigned Administrator.

     

     Essential Functions 

    Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose  of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives. 

    Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g. adaptive equipment assistance, medication, etc.) for the purpose of meeting immediate health care needs. 

    Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc. (e.g. state testing/assessments, etc.) for the purpose of supporting teachers in the classroom. 

    Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g. read stories, listen to students read, providing writing assistance, reinforce English lessons, provide spelling practice, facilitate activities, computer learning programs, etc.) for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching academic goals and grade level standards. 

    Assists medically fragile or physically disabled students (e.g. lavatory, clothing, diapering, toileting, washup, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining students' personal hygiene. 

    Communicates with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, and parents for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing conventional/ IEP objectives. 

    Implements under the supervision of assigned teacher, behavioral plans designed by IEP or pre-school team for regular students, or students with behavior disorders or other special conditions for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts. 

    Maintains instructional materials and/or manual and electronic files/records (e.g. student data, assessments, test results, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items; providing written reference; and/or meeting mandated requirements. 

    Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, cafeteria, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment. 

    Provides. under the supervision of assigned teacher, instruction to students in a variety of individual and group activities (e.g. academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, etc.) for the purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives; implementing instructional/ IEP plans; and ensuring students success in school. 

    Responds to emergency situations (e.g. injured students; student conflicts, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing issue to appropriate personnel 

    Submits electronic observations and written anecdotal when necessary/anecdotal records for the purpose of providing necessary information for student learning assessment. 

     

    Experience: Job related experience is required.

    Education: Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in job-related area.

    Equivalency: 60 hours of verifiable college credit hours from an accredited institution of higher learning or Para Pro Exam.

    Salary: $16.82/HR
