Reports to: Director of Field Operations

FLSA Status: Exempt

Description:

The General Field Superintendent is a senior field leader responsible for developing, coaching, and evaluating an assigned team of Superintendents and/or field-based Project Engineers, regardless of the projects to which those direct reports are staffed. The role's primary focus is people leadership and the continued development of ICI's field team. Beyond their direct reports, General Field Superintendents also serve as a leadership resource to the broader field organization, supporting other field leaders and project teams when their experience, relationships, or leadership can contribute to a successful outcome.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

People Leadership, Development, and Performance

  • Lead, mentor, develop, and evaluate assigned direct reports, taking ownership of their growth, performance, engagement, and long-term success regardless of project assignment, and coaching them through challenges by encouraging ownership and sound decision-making.
  • Build strong relationships with direct reports through consistent communication and regular one-on-one meetings per ICI's Leadership Coaching program, establishing clear expectations and providing timely, direct, constructive feedback on performance, development, and career goals
  • Maintain regular communication and appropriate visibility into the projects where direct reports are staffed, partnering with the Director of Field Operations, Project Executives, Project Managers, and other project leadership to understand day-to-day performance, working conditions and coaching needs
  • Identify individual strengths, development needs, and readiness for increased responsibility; establish meaningful development goals, and provide meaningful input for performance evaluations, career development planning, promotion decisions, and succession planning for assigned direct reports.
  • Identify and develop future field leaders, actively contributing to ICI's pipeline of Senior Superintendents, General Field Superintendents, and other field leadership positions.
  • Identify performance, workload, development, engagement, or staffing concerns involving direct reports, and partner promptly with the Director of Field Operations and appropriate company leadership to address them with improvement plans, corrective action, or other personnel matters when necessary.

Field Leadership and Support

  • Serve as a trusted leadership and operational resource to Superintendents, field-based Project Engineers, and project teams across the organization, providing coaching and hands-on support for complex project, personnel, subcontractor, client, technical, scheduling, or operational challenges.
  • Provide additional leadership presence and support during jobsite emergencies and periods of significant transition or staffing change, stepping in wherever increased field leadership involvement is needed.
  • Visit projects regularly to stay connected with field staff, observe performance, and understand project conditions.
  • Attend project meetings when beneficial to support field staff or help resolve significant issues.
  • Work collaboratively with Project Executives, Director of Field Operations, Project Managers, and other General Field Superintendents to strengthen project execution without overriding established project leadership, connecting field employees to additional company resources or expertise as needed.

Field Standards, Consistency, Safety, and Quality

  • Coach the field team on the consistent implementation of ICI field standards, Best Practices, and expectations including planning, scheduling, documentation, communication, safety, quality, logistics, project closeout, and the effective use of company systems and technology such as Procore.
  • Identify inconsistencies, recurring challenges, and improvement opportunities across projects; partner with the Director of Field Operations and other field leaders to strengthen company practices, share lessons learned, and provide feedback on opportunities to improve field processes, training, standards, tools, and resources.
  • Promote, model, and reinforce a proactive safety culture, supporting field leaders in meeting company, client, and OSHA requirements.
  • Support field staff in understanding and implementing company quality standards, and in developing plans to prevent and resolve quality concerns.

Staffing and Organizational Leadership

  • Partner with the Director of Field Operations and other company leaders on field staffing needs and assignments, providing input on employee strengths, project fit, workload, and readiness for increased responsibility, and supporting successful transitions between projects, roles, and levels of responsibility
  • Participate in the evaluation of prospective field hires and support the onboarding and integration of new field employees, establishing clear expectations and connections to ICI's culture and practices.
  • Communicate and engage with company leadership, contributing to strategic goals and supporting the implementation of field leadership initiatives and priorities.

Client and Industry Leadership

  • Coach and support field leaders in building lasting client and A/E partnerships rooted in trust, open communication, accountability, and results
  • Serve as a senior ICI representative when additional leadership involvement is beneficial to a client, design professional, subcontractor, consultant, or other project stakeholder relationship

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Temporarily perform as on-site Field Supervision when business needs require
  • Maintain open, responsive, and professional communication and relationships with all team members
  • Take a leadership role to inspire others to take pride in their accomplishments
  • Participate in industry associations, actively promote ICI and network to exchange information and gain insight on construction trends
  • Travel to project sites across the United States as necessary to fulfill role responsibilities
  • Model ICI’s core values and foster a culture of ownership, accountability, teamwork and mentorship

  • Ability to read and comprehend construction drawings, specifications, schedules, and other Contract Documents.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, develop, evaluate, and hold others accountable, building trust and credibility with field employees through direct, constructive feedback and strong team leadership.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Procore Construction Management Software.
