The primary purpose of a graduate assistantship is to promote the student’s successful completion of an academic program while giving them experience working in an academic environment. The graduate assistant in the CETL communicates directly and frequently with faculty members to help connect them with support for course implementation and delivery.
Graduate assistantships support the University’s teaching, research and service missions for the benefit of students in areas closely related to their chosen field of study.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Graduate Teaching Assistants support faculty-led instruction while contributing to students' career training. General duties of GTAs include assisting with instructional and workshop delivery, providing feedback, and supporting course administration, while receiving supervised, mentored training designed to advance their professional development as educators and scholars. GTAs perform duties directly related to instruction and the GTA’s professional development, work within defined hour limits (no more than 20 hours per week), and operate under the supervision of a faculty instructor. GTAs are typically not the instructors of record unless explicitly authorized.

Typical roles for GTAs fall within the following broad categories:

1. Instructional support and direct instruction

2. Faculty support and engagement

3. Course preparation and administration

4. Professional responsibilities related to teaching and career objectives of the students.

Graduate students in business, media, communication, engineering, computer science and related fields who are interested in collaborating with faculty on course design, as well as workshop development, media production, and faculty support, are encouraged to apply for a graduate assistantship with the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) for the upcoming academic year.
