Group Fitness Instructor Job Duties & Responsibilities
· Warmly greets members and guests and ensures their needs are met.
· Responds promptly and courteously to member and staff inquiries.
· Provides guidance to participants on proper technique, equipment use, and safe exercise practices during classes.
· Maintains a friendly and positive attitude, supporting a welcoming environment for all participants.
· Responds to member or guest questions and concerns within 24 hours whenever possible.
· Assists with coordination and updates of the group fitness class schedule.
· Ensures smooth daily operation of group exercise classes and overall class flow.
· Performs and leads group exercise classes as scheduled or when covering instructor call-outs.
· Supports the development and deployment of class audit tools to maintain W.E.L.L. program standards.
· Promotes Wellness Center programs, activities, and special events.
· Conducts with the onboarding, orientation, and training of new group fitness instructors.
· Helps create and maintain instructor development plans and participates in monthly check-ins.
· Communicates promptly with the Fitness Manager regarding staffing needs, concerns, or incidents involving staff or members.
· Helps ensure instructors follow departmental uniform, grooming, and operational standards.
· Maintains cleanliness, organization, and proper storage of all group fitness studios and equipment.
· Ensures studios are set up prior to classes and reset afterward in accordance with standards.
Assists with updating the My Wellness app and other digital platforms related to scheduling and member communication.
· Works with the Club’s Marketing team to support the creation and distribution of promotional materials.
· Supports Fitness Manager in setting and tracking monthly and annual goals for group exercise programming.
· Attends and participates in staff training, meetings, and member focus groups as required.
· Follows all departmental and Club policies, procedures, uniform expectations, and safety standards.
· Works a variety of shifts as needed, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
· Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Group Fitness Instructor Minimum Qualifications and Critical Skills
- 2 years of experience managing staff in a professional fitness environment preferred
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to relate to a wide variety of people.
- Exceptional computer skills and technology aptitude.
- Must be able to understand and follow verbal/written instructions.
- Must be able to handle a high volume of calls on a multi-line phone system.
- Must be able to use tact and understanding when dealing with a variety of customer service problems, including stressful and highly emotional situations.
- Must have the willingness to provide exceptional service to members and desire to provide leadership to position the department to achieve the mission.
· High school diploma or equivalent required.
· Nationally recognized Group Exercise or Fitness Instructor certification (ACE, AFAA, NASM, ISSA, or equivalent) required.
· CPR/AED certification required (or obtained within 30 days of hire).
· Current yoga and aqua certifications required, or ability to achieve within the first 90 days of employment
· 2 years of experience working as a group exercise instructor preferred
2 years of experience managing staff in a professional fitness environment preferred
Group Fitness Coordinator Physical Demands
· Must be able to perform and demonstrate physical exercise movements for extended periods, including bending, lifting, stepping, twisting, and reaching.
· Must be able to lead multiple classes per day, which may include high-intensity interval training, cycling, strength training, yoga, or other modalities.
