About the Department

JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT 
A collegiate head coach serves as a leader, mentor, and strategist, driving the success of the team both on and off the field. Their duties include developing and implementing training programs, creating game strategies, and fostering skill development to enhance individual and team performance. The coach is tasked with building a positive team culture, promoting sportsmanship, and resolving conflicts to maintain a cohesive and motivated group. Administrative responsibilities include managing budgets, organizing travel, and ensuring compliance with NCAA and conference regulations.

Position Duties

FUNCTIONS:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Directs the Baseball Program
    1. Leads the SSU Baseball Program through planning, direction, and structure to meet the goals of the institution and the team.
    2. Provides on-field coaching and game preparation, film evaluation & scouting for both team and individual skill improvement.
    3. Develops schedules for practice and competition and ensures the availability and maintenance of equipment and facilities. Oversees travel plans, coordinates video, opponent scouting, etc.
    4. Responsible for selecting and supervising volunteer and paid assistant coaches, overseeing budgets (operating and scholarship), and executing fundraising plans.
    5. Recruits, evaluates, and monitors student athletes who represent Shawnee State well in academics, discipline, and sportsmanship. Motivates athletes to be good examples to the university community.
  2. Supervises and manages both staff and athletes on their team, to ensure compliance with all Shawnee State and NCAA policies and procedures
    1. Ensure all student-athletes are up to date with pertinent information regarding NCAA and Shawnee State policy and procedures
    2. Ensure assistant head coaches on their staff are up to date with pertinent information regarding NCAA and Shawnee State policy and procedures
    3. Monitors their budget to ensure overages do not occur
    4. Supports department-wide fundraising
    5. Regularly attend staff meetings, information sessions, and conferences to stay up to date on all policies, protocols, and procedures
  3. Coordinates communication and maintains productive relationships between the SSU Athletic Department and shared athletic facilities (the City of Portsmouth, Portsmouth City Schools, travel ball organizations).
    1. Serves as the point of contact between SSU and local organizations for baseball field usage.
    2. Helps develop plans and projects for the improvement of Branch Ricky Park.
    3. Helps develop plans and projects for the improvement of BRP, monitors costs, assists with timelines, and ensures field maintenance at Branch Ricky Park meets expectations for a college baseball venue
    4. Serves as the point of contact between SSU for summer usage and the tournament at Branch Ricky Park.
    5. Solicit teams that would like to play and collect roster information. Schedule all practice time.


Minimum Qualifications

 MINIMUM JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 

  1. Previous coaching experience at the collegiate level
  2. Knowledge of coaching strategies, recruiting, eligibility rules, and eligibility
  3. Knowledge of higher education regarding student retention and progress towards graduation
  4. Good communication skills to speak with recruits, parents, and students

Other Qualifications

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE) 

  1.  Bachelor's degree in Sports Administration, Sports Coaching, or related field 
  2.  Two (2) to three (3) years of coaching and playing experience 
  3.  Successful MVR
