   Health Services Assistant I: 

$19.51 - $23.72 Hourly/$1,560.80 - $1,897.60 Biweekly

Health Services Assistant II:

 $21.54 - $26.18 Hourly/$1,723.20 - $2,094.40 Biweekly


Bilingual Incentive!
Bilingual Incentive Pay is 7.5% above the Health Services Assistant I or Health Services Assistant II base salary.

About the Position: Under director general supervision, performs a variety of support activities for County clinics and behavioral or public health programs. Activities may include medical office support, word processing, data entry and organization, receipt of payments, telephone and counter reception, patient scheduling and intake, and maintaining, processing, and filing applications and medical records; creates routine correspondence and/or reports; provides information and assistance to staff and the general public; and performs related duties as assigned.

Position Duties

  • Serves as a receptionist; receives and screens visitors and checks them in for appointments; receives and screens telephone calls, and takes messages; provides factual information regarding County, department, or center activities. Addresses issues and concerns from members of the public, vendors, and County staff; replies to voicemail and email messages; distributes literature pertaining to County services and events. 
  • Provides information to patients or program participants related to program activities, educational material, and community resources; accompanies patients to meetings and appointments to provide support and facilitate better communication with service providers.
  • Enters, edits, and retrieves data; prepares periodic or special reports from a computer system following established formats and menus; may create report formats using programmed software to meet individual needs.
  • Bilingual Candidates: Translate, interpret and otherwise communicate with members of the Spanish speaking community.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Health Services Assistant I/II: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

Health Services Assistant I:  One (1) year of general office experience is preferred. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Health Services Assistant II: Two (2) years of clerical experience in records management, or in a medical office, behavioral or public health program, or community-based organization or higher-level coursework in office or business practices.  

License & Special Requirements:

  • A valid Class C California driver’s license or alternative form of transportation may be required for some positions at the time of appointment.  Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Current, less than 1 year old, typing certificate.
  • Bilingual Candidates:
    • Must pass a Cooperative Personnel Services (CPS) written and/or oral bilingual proficiency test (or other appropriate test selected by the County) to qualify.

Other Qualifications

The department is recruiting for multiple vacancies.

In addition, Tehama County is establishing an eligibility list to fill future vacancies for a Health Services Assistant I/II or a Health Services Assistant I/II - Bilingual, as well as subsequent vacancies which occur during the life of the eligibility list. 

Testing Dates:  June 25 - 28, 2026. Testing will be provided via email.

Tentative Interview Date(s): 
1st- Thursday, July 2, 2026 from 1:00pm to 3:30pm.
2nd- Friday, July 10, 2026 from 1:00pm to 3:30pm. 
*Only the most qualified candidates will be invited to interview.

New employees should anticipate being hired at the beginning step of the salary range. Candidates who exceed entry level qualifications may be considered, with approval from the Board of Supervisors, for placement at other than A step.

*Rates listed in this flyer represent a full-time employee’s accrual rate and health insurance premium rate. Part-time employees will have pro-rated accruals and health insurance premium rates based on the number of hours they work.

This position is represented by the Local 39 bargaining unit.

SALARY:
  • Annual salary step increases based upon satisfactory performance and completion of one year of employment (Step A to E).

HEALTH:
  • Approximately 80% of the premium for medical, dental, and vision plan is paid by the County (EPO Plan). The plan covers the employee and all eligible dependents at NO ADDITIONAL COST!
  • Employee premiums are $234.54 per month as of January 1, 2025 and $266.97 as of January 1, 2026 for employee and all eligible dependents.

PAID LEAVES:
  • Benefits also include an annual paid leave plan of 
    • 96 hours of vacation (increases upon continuous years of service)
    • 96 hours of sick leave
    • 14 paid holidays plus one 8 hour personal holiday
LIFE INSURANCE:
  • Approximately 80% of the premium for a $30,000 life insurance plan for the employee is paid for by the County. 

RETIREMENT:
  • A retirement plan through CalPERS.
    • CalPERS Formulas: 
      • Classic member = 2% @ 55
      • New Member = 2% @ 62
  • A Deferred Compensation retirement plan option with a County match of up to a maximum of $60 per month.
