    TITLE: High School Science Teacher - Deering High
     

    POSITION OVERVIEW:

    Portland Public Schools is hiring a full-time Science Teacher to join the team at Deering High School. We seek candidates with a demonstrated commitment to equitable teaching practices, a willingness to collaborate closely with others, and the ability to teach to high standards in a heterogeneous classroom. Experience working with Multilingual Learners and students with disabilities is a must.

    Under the direction of the school Principal, the Science Teacher plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students. Provides an environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of individuals, ensuring success for every student. Supervises students in various school-related settings. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes. Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff, and community. Develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
     

    ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Implementing state learning standards, Deering curricula, and assessments to give all students access to rigorous and engaging grade-level work
    • Working collaboratively with colleagues to improve student outcomes through analysis of student work, adjustments in instruction, and shared teaching strategies
    • Managing behavior in a way that aligns with school-wide expectations and protocols, and is clear, consistent, equitable, and student-centered
    • Establishing and maintaining a cooperative working relationship with students and families based on trust, understanding, and respect for the communities in which they identify


    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Knowledge of the PPS curriculum, techniques for integrating curriculum, PPS policies, and effective instructional practices
    • Experience with proficiency-based grading, including developing high-quality assessments aligned to student-friendly rubrics
    • Strong understanding of the mechanics of effective pedagogy and experience using differentiation strategies to teach heterogeneous classes
    • Demonstrated willingness to collaborate with colleagues, including ESOL and Special Ed teachers, to design effective lessons and assessments
    • Ability to teach with cultural humility, through questioning deeply held beliefs and viewpoints, and grappling with conflicting perspectives
    • Willingness and ability to use technology to teach and communicate with students and families
    • Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, and school-based staff, students, parents, and community
    • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills

     

    EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor's degree in the applicable field of education from an accredited college or university
    • Master's degree preferred
    • ESOL experience or certification (660 Endorsement) preferred

     

    CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Maine State Teacher Certificate with one or both of the following endorsements (more info):
      • 350 Physical Science (6-12)
      • 395 Life Science (6-12)
    • Maine State CHRC authorization (more info) **
      • **if you already have an active teacher certification, you do not need a separate CHRC as this clearance is tied to your teacher certification

     

    EMPLOYMENT DETAILS: 

    • Schedule: School Year, Full Time (1.0 FTE)
    • Assignment: Permanent
    • Reports to: School Principal
    • Contract: Part of PEA union (see 2025-2028 CBA here)
    • Salary: Based on education and experience, as outlined in CBA
