About the Department

At Lexington Maintenance, operates the boom truck in the operation of tree removal and/or overhead sign replacement. Use hydraulic aerial lifts to position the bucket safely at required heights, following OSHA and utility safety protocols. Operates the slope mower in cutting back right-of-way. Performs proper maintenance on mowers which includes grease daily, ensures blades are sharp and deck is kept clean. Makes sure all signs and safety guards are in place before operation begins. Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs to tractor such as changing tires, blades, and replacing light bulbs. Works with a shovel, bush ax, chain saw, limb shipper, pole saw, and sling blade to clear site areas and right-of-way by mower/bush hog in clearing site hazards. Remove and dispose of all work debris after completion. Operates a 5 yard standard dump truck to haul debris and asphalt. Checks the gas and follows preventive maintenance program daily. Ensures tarp is in place and all loose materials are removed from the sides of the truck and tail gate before operation begins. Flags traffic for protection of workers and motorists. Assists in the placing of traffic control devices for work zone safety according to the South Carolina Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, to include operating medium or heavy duty equipment. May include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Trains for and obtains tanker endorsement certification for CDL .

Position Duties

One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.

Other Qualifications

May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
