About the Department

Under general supervision, serves as a Specialized Equipment Operator on a bridge maintenance crew in a wide variety of preventative maintenance, rehabilitation, and repair activities of bridges and culverts in District 4. Operates specialized, heavy, medium, and small equipment used in the maintenance of bridges. Serves as Specialized Equipment Operator on a District 4 Bridge Maintenance Crew. Operates specialized equipment in a variety of bridge maintenance activities including but not limited to boom truck, crawler crane, snooper truck and truck crane. Operates other heavy equipment in a variety of bridge maintenance activities as needed including but not limited to backhoe, crawler dozer, excavator, and lowboy truck tractor.

Operates other medium equipment in a variety of bridge maintenance activities as needed including but not limited to skid steer loader and tandem dump truck. Operates and maintains small equipment, powered hand tools, and other equipment in a variety of bridge maintenance activities as needed including but not limited to drills, jack hammers, concrete mixers, dump trucks, and forklift. Performs skilled manual labor in various timber, steel, and concrete bridge repairs. Conducts safety inspections and daily preventative maintenance activities on all assigned equipment to ensure that a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to prolong equipment life.

Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations throughout the district and state including inclement weather, collisions, or natural disasters. May include being available for extended hours or extended shift operations. May include operating portable tank mounted salt brine and anti-icing equipment or standard dump truck with snowplow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists in the placement of traffic control devices and safety devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone and/or job site according to current agency guidelines, policies, and procedures. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Position Duties

Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.


The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis
