Job Description
Under minimal supervision, prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures that aid in the confirmation of patient diagnosis.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the preparation of tissue specimens for routine and special procedures to aid in the confirmation of patient diagnosis.
  • Gross, process, embed, cut, and stain surgical, biopsy and anatomical tissues for light and fluorescent microscopic slide review.
  • Performs complex histologic procedures and analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles.
  • Performs, records and analyzes data in order to make judgments.
  • Maintains instruments, utilizing established protocols.
  • Follows established policies and procedures.
  • Leads research and develops protocols with supervision.
  • Trains associate and intermediate technicians.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience using automated equipment and instruments including microscopes, microtomes, and other lab equipment.
  • Recent experience working with a wide variety of tissues in a laboratory or clinical setting.
  • Exhibits accuracy and thoroughness; monitors own work for quality.
  • Ability to work independently with strong attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Ability to maintain strict protocols of all confidential or sensitive information.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

EDUCATION:

High school diploma or GED is required.

EXPERIENCE:
Six (6) years of histological experience is required.  
 

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
