About the Department

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), a world-renowned scientific research institution, is seeking an HVAC Apprentice to join our Facilities team. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to build a long-term career in the skilled trades through hands-on training, mentorship, and practical experience.

Working alongside experienced HVAC professionals, the HVAC Apprentice will receive comprehensive training in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. The successful candidate will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to advance into a Mechanic, HVAC position.

Position Duties

Under the guidance of experienced HVAC personnel, the HVAC Apprentice will:

  • Learn to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC systems and related equipment.
  • Assist with preventive maintenance and service of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.
  • Gain experience working in residential, commercial, and institutional environments.
  • Learn to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Apply mathematical concepts, including basic algebra and geometry, to HVAC layouts, measurements, and installations.
  • Follow safety procedures and industry best practices while working independently and as part of a team.
  • Perform assigned tasks with increasing responsibility as skills and experience develop.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical, vocational, mechanical, or electrical training preferred.

Experience

  • 1–2 years of experience or exposure to HVAC, electrical, plumbing, construction, maintenance, or related trades preferred.
  • Candidates with a strong mechanical aptitude and a desire to learn are encouraged to apply.

Skills

  • Strong work ethic and commitment to learning a skilled trade.
  • Ability to understand mechanical and electrical systems and principles.
  • Good communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work safely with limited supervision.
  • Basic computer skills.

The hourly range for this role is $17.77-$21.33.   The hourly rate listed is a good faith determination of potential base compensation that may be offered to a successful applicant for this position at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future.
